Nassau Bahamas - of course it is touristy, but I like it!
"Oh it's soooo touristy"... is a normal reaction from anyone that mentions the Bahamas. Well this should surprise no one as it is an affordable and lovely place that is located near the United States. I was actually surprised at how affordable it was. Of course, i went there in the early 90's so things might have changed a bit.

nothing like seeing a plane in the water near the runway that you are about to land on
I am from the East Coast of the US, and our beaches, while fun, do not have clear water.... ever. So when I first landed in the Bahamas this truly amazed me. The water clarity was just unreal. We were staying in a mid-range hotel and to be honest I don't remember how much it was, probably like $50 a night or something like that. I had recently graduated from high school and this was my "beach week" which also happened to be a wedding ceremony for one of my best friend's Dad.

You can snorkel right off the beach and see for what seems like forever into the distance. It was actually a bit creepy for me because at that time in my life I felt like a sitting duck for sharks. But really, the most dangerous thing I encountered was the intense sunburn from being a moron with the sun tan lotion.

Our hotel was very close to Xanadu beach, and while we did have to take a short bus ride (nearly every hotel includes this service for free) it was close enough that in my mind then and now, it was well worth the much smaller hotel price. I had never seen a beach as beautiful as Xanadu at that point in my life. I don't really think I have now either and I live in the tropics near beaches. It is really something else. The water is warm, but the currents in that area make it a bit cooler than say, Thailand, where the water feels like a warm bath all the time.
If you live in the US, particularly in the part of the country that has direct flights to the Bahamas, I think you should ignore the nay-sayers about it being overly touristy. Are you going to have the place to yourself? Of course not. But the ocean is a big place folks, and if you want to stay somewhere that is both this lovely and this inexpensive, you are going to have accept the fact that other people are also going to be there.
i ve been in Bahamas with my parents in 2011, it was awesome but my father was confuced driving the rentcare there, cuz they were people having it on the left others on the rights it was so much for him :D was kind of funny cuz something it seems that nobody was driving that car near by :D
well I'm afraid road chaos is extremely common in most poorer countries. I have experienced that most countries like the Bahamas or Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc that people on the roads just kind of do whatever they want. For some reason I think a country needs to reach the level of affluence that they have obtained in Malaysia before there is order on the streets :)
cuz people there are not used to follow the rules, its kinda the same in Morocco ( where i come from ), people are insane on the road, it seems sometimes like fast and furious scenes :D
hey gooddream. I love to see crystal clear waters and know what you mean about being a sitting duck. I used to dive often of Cape Point at a beach in Buffels Bay and there you could literally see 100 m all around you. Unfortunately the day after we were there two divers were attacked and I never ventured much further after that. I stick to the coast line these days and I am very aware.
Wont be long before I visit some of your recommendations.
on my trip i was 17 I think. I actually freaked out at one point and swam to shore as fast as i could. Later in life i would become a dive instructor and come to realize that most of the ocean is filled with stuff that is scared to death of you and it is incredibly unlikely that you will attacked... it does happen, but i now know it is an unrealistic fear.

I've had the same experience years ago in Australia.
I started breathing to fast because of the excitement. After a while I calmed down and started breathing normal again.
bahamas as a country is a lovely place to visits as a tourist and as a couple with your family members . they have some of the best hotels and beautiful beaches and sceneries in the world. What is so special and unique about their hotels is the location of most hotels close to the beach and sea for a good view and relaxations, and they also have some good sea foods also
I definitely think it is worth a visit. Who cares if it is touristy, it is such a beautiful place that none of that even matters...
