In 1496 from Stockholm on 70 light ships to Ivangorod arrived a five thousandth Swedish army with firearms, led by Svante Stura and stormed the fortress. But for a long time to consolidate in Ivangorod, the Swedes failed. Svant Sture first offered to give his conquest to the Livonian Order, but was refused. And, soon after learning about the approach of the Russian army, the Swedes fled, taking with them about 300 prisoners.
In 1496, the fortress was repaired and, from the east, another great fortress was added to it, which later received the name of the Big Boyar Town. The new fortress was also rectangular and at its corners were large round towers. In the middle of the three walls of the fortress there were square towers, dividing each of them almost equally. The fourth wall was the same as the fortress of 1492. The new fortress could accommodate a much larger garrison and was built according to the latest technology of building defensive structures of that time. The new Ivangorod successfully withstood the siege in 1502.
In 1581 the Swedes still managed to capture the fortress and it was under Swedish rule for years.
In August 1704, during the Northern War of Russia with Sweden, the Ivangorod Fortress was again annexed to Russia.
