Visit with me the surprisingly beautiful city of Marseille, France
Dear Steemit friends, today I would like to introduce you a French city — Marseille. We have been there last week and I was very surprised what a nice place it is, because sometimes its reputation is quite opposite.
Marseille is the second biggest city in France and it is also the oldest French city. According to the legend, Marseille was first founded by the greeks and they have built a trade port here, and after it became a Roman colony, during the French revolution, 500 volunteers from Marseille went to Paris to defend the revolutionary government, all the way they were singing their revolutionary song which is called "marseillaise", in the end the song became the national anthem of France.
During world war II, the German and Italian armies bombarded Marseille, many of the ancient buildings in Marseille were destroyed.
This is how human civilization was forced to rebuild after the war, once and once again.
Although there are countless churches in Marseille, the "Notre Dame de la Garde" (Notre Dame cathedral) is the must-see. It is located at the hill top in Marseille city, and it's a symbol of Marseilles. For locals, Notre Dame Cathedral has an absolutely high status. They treat Madonna as the "La bonne mère", which means a great mother. Marseille people think that Modonna like a mother protects sailors, fishermen and whole Marseille.
The cathedral is also a perfect spot to overlook the several islands in the Mediterranean sea and the whole Marseille city. When it's sunny, the blue color of the sea and the red roof tops of the houses are woven into a colorful picture.
Walking down from the cathedral, you can see the most popular tourists destination, the old port of Marseilles. The old port attracts people from all of the world, it's extremely busy from morning till night.
Many people said that if you haven't been to old port, it means that you haven't been to Marseilles. The old port is the landmark of Marseilles, the birthplace of Marseille. Around the old port, there are numerous restaurants, cafés, shops, and lively fish market.
Since Marseille has been a trade port from Roman times, there were already many trade ships from far east, eastern and western civilization blend here. Since modern times, African people have been landed in continental Europe, and the first stop is the port of Marseille. Many different people from all of the world gathered in Marseille, so cultural diversity is also one of the characteristics of Marseille. I feel that Marseille is very unique and amorous city in whole Europe.

As you've mentioned that it's the oldest city of France, the cultural heritage can be seen in the pictures you've uploaded. The buildings seems so traditional with the modern facilities.
