Diwali, popularly associated as the festival of lights, is one of the most celebrated occasion in India. Also known as Deepawali, it is observed nation-wide in the autumn season. It is also commemorated by people in various countries such as Nepal, Pakistan, Malaysia and Mauritius. This year the dates for Diwali are October 18 and 19, 2017 for south and north India, respectively.
The significance of the festival is the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. The preparation for the festival begins days in advance and people are geared up to deck up their homes and offices with diyas, lights, torans, candles and much more. Gifts and sweets are wrapped and kept for the occasion, homes are lit up, streets and shops are full of goodies.
The festivities begin with Dhanteras, followed by ‘Narak Chaturdasi’ on second day, Deepawali on third day, ‘Diwali Padwa’ dedicated to matrimony on fourth day and ends with ‘Bhai Dooj’ dedicated to sister-brother bond on the fifth day. Over the period of five days, people visit their friends, families and relatives and exchange gifts and greetings. Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshiped on the occasion and people seek for their blessings.
