My God how hot is this summer in Rome. Always around 100°F. I can not resist anymore!

I’ve been thinking to run away for days.

Instead I'm here in Rome, giving design lessons to my sister's son, who has the test at the end of August. My sister: ”Marco, please, can you help Simone? Come on, it's easy for you …”.

It’s easy?.

It is five o'clock in the afternoon, I want to leave tomorrow and not only I have not booked yet where to sleep, I did not buy the train tickets, I have not prepared the suitcases ... but I still don't know where to go ... !!

18 agosto, venerdì

Dio che caldo a Roma quest’anno. Sempre attorno ai 40 gradi. Non se ne può più!

Sono giorni che penso di scappare.

E, invece, sono qui a dare ripetizioni di progettazione a mio nipote, che è stato rimandato. Mia sorella: ”Marco, non è che puoi dare una mano a Simone? Dai… che ti costa…”.

Che mi costa?!…

Che sono le cinque del pomeriggio di venerdì, vorrei partire domani e non solo non ho prenotato, fatto i biglietti, le valige,… ma non so ancora dove andare…!!

I take the maps of the Dolomites. Because this is certain (at least this one!): I will walk on the Dolomites.

I ask my son (who is drawing, making projects,... and advises me, distracted, half-mouth). I think about, try to say, ... but I speak alone. He says yes with his head, with his eyes glued to the pc screen, and answers in "automatic function": ”Yeah ... nice ... why not? ... okay, sure …”

Okay, I got it: Pale San Martino di Castrozza mountains'. Five days walking and sleeping in the shelters: Bottari, Mulaz, Rosetta, Pradidali, Velo della Madonna.

Tiro fuori le mappe delle Dolomiti. Perché una cosa è certa (almeno quello!): andrò a camminare sulle Dolomiti.

Mi consulto con mio figlio (che intanto disegna, progetta, e mi consiglia, distratto, a mezza bocca). Domando, articolo riflessioni,… parlo da solo. Lui annuisce con la testa, occhi allo schermo del pc, e continua con la cantilena (è in “funzione automatico”): ”Si… bello… perché no?… Va bene, certo…”

Basta. Deciso: Gruppo delle Pale di San Martino di Castrozza. Cinque giorni per rifugi: Bottari, Mulaz, Rosetta, Pradidali, Velo della Madonna.

Meanwhile my wife has come back from work. Destroyed. Since tomorrow she's on vacation.

She also come. Valeria wants to come with me. Is it possible? How come? Maybe because she can't withstand this terrible heat anymore ... But I'm glad. I'm really happy.

I call the shelters, They have rooms. I book them.

I buy train tickets by internet. It is done.

There's nothing else to do but to prepare the backpacks... When we finish, it's midnight!

Intanto mia moglie è rientrata, distrutta, dal lavoro. Da domani è in ferie.

Viene anche lei. Viene anche Valeria. Possibile? Sarà perché non sopporta più il caldo… Ma sono contento. Sono molto contento.

Chiamo i rifugi. C'è posto. Prenoto.

Faccio i biglietti del treno. È fatta.

Non resta che preparare gli zaini. Finiamo che è l’una passata!

August 19, Saturday

At 7:50 am we depart from Termini station.

19 agosto, sabato

Alle 07:50 partiamo da Termini.

At eleven, we are in Padova. Another train and, after one hour, we are in Belluno. Then we take the bus and, in twenty minutes, we are in Falcade. Almost 450 miles in 5 hours!

Alle undici siamo a Padova, all'una a Belluno e all'una e un quarto, con il pullman, a Falcade. Quasi 700 km in 5 ore!

And the bus driver, to make us a favor, has lengthened the race of 1 mile to lead us to the attack of the trail!

An extraordinary mix.

At two o'clock in the afternoon we are at the table. I would never have said it!

E l'autista, per farci un favore, ha allungato la corsa di 1 Km per portarci fino all'attacco del sentiero.

Coincidenze con precisione svizzera.

Simpatia e disponibilità …partenopee..!!

Alle due siamo già a tavola!!

But we lose too much time.

We go back to the village to buy new mountain boots for Valeria. ... And the new harness for both of us …

Valeria looks at me, frightened. "What do we need the harness for?"

I tell her it's for security. That we have not planned any equipped route, but ... you never know ... If that happens then? If there is an unexpected event? Then what do we do? We can't go back…

At the end, we leave the village and take the trail leading to the shelter. It's almost six and a half pm. Quite late…

Ma perdiamo tempo. Troppo tempo.

Andiamo a comprare gli scarponi nuovi per Valeria. ...E l'imbrago nuovo per tutti e due…

Valeria mi guarda spaventata. ”A cosa ci serve l’imbrago?”

La convinco che è per sicurezza. Che non abbiamo in programma nessuna via attrezzata, ma che …non si sa mai… Se poi capita? Se c’è un imprevisto? poi che facciamo? Torniamo indietro?…

Alla fine lasciamo il paese e imbocchiamo il sentiero che porta al rifugio che sono quasi le sei e mezza.

The path is in the woods. Short, but tiring. One hour walk and 400 meters to climb...

We arrive in the dark, under a crazy storm. Destroyed by the tiredness and by the fact that, within a few hours, we have passed from the unbearable hot at sea level to the cold at 1600 meters.

The view of the lights of the shelter, among the trees, finally opens our hearts.

Il tragitto è tutto nel fitto bosco, Corto, ma faticoso. Un'ora di cammino e 400 metri di dislivello…

Arriviamo col buio, sotto un temporale pazzesco. Sfatti. Dalla stanchezza e per trovarci proiettati nel giro di poche ora dal caldo torrido a livello del mare al freddo dei 1600 metri.

La vista del rifugio illuminato, tra gli alberi, finalmente, ci apre il cuore.

We take a shower and then, dressing dry and warm clothes, we go to dinner: vegetable soup, steak, wine, strudel, grappa... At our table there are four guys from Modena with whom we talk a bit. One of them bought a old house down in the valley, he restored it, and now he lives half of the year here ... In Modena, he works in a plant nursery…

Then, around ten pm, we go to the room. ...at ten and a half the light is switched off…

I take few minutes to smoke my pipe and then we go to bed.

Doccia, vestiti asciutti e caldi, cena, vino, strudel, grappa. Quattro chiacchiere con quattro ragazzi di Modena. ...uno di loro si è comprato un rudere, l'ha ristrutturato, e vive metà dell'anno qui... A Modena fa il vivaista.

Poi alle dieci in camera. ...alle dieci e mezza staccano la luce…

Fumata di pipa e a letto.

I left the window a little open.

In the night I had to close it. What a cold! ... I slept with three heavy military blankets!

Ho lasciato la finestra un po' aperta.

Nella notte l'ho dovuta chiudere. Un freddo! ...ho dormito con tre coperte militari!

But tomorrow morning we take it easy.

Breakfast with calm and then we leave.

Destination: Mulaz shelter. It's up. We have to climb. Four hours walking, they say.
