Magellan's Cross

in #travel7 years ago

Last week I went to syudad in Cebu and I happen to pass through Magellan's cross. I can't stop my self to be amazed in the design of its structure.

When I was in college I always pass through on the same spot since I love to walk in going to school. But that day I took picture of it and appreciate the symbol or importance of its existence.

The Cross of Magellan is one of the tourist attraction here in Cebu. It was planted by Magellan in April 14, 1521 when he baptised the first Christian Filipinos. That's why it is a popular historical landmark in the Philippines.

As you can see in the photo, the ceiling is painted with a scene showing the landing of Magellan in Cebu and planting of the original cross on the shore. To protect the original cross it was encased in a hollow tindalo wood. It is already customary among the devotees to drop coins or light candles at the foot of the cross.
