I realised how boring that comment was and as a result it's been itching at my head for days.

So, as far as normality of society. For sure, it's a type of crazy. The main issue I see is that society as it holds itself together now is actually dependent on our pain and discomfort in order for it to have the many nefarious unnecessary industries it does have today.

It needs these non-survival oriented industries to justify its existence. Retail workers stand in fish bowls and wait for people to come in. Sometimes for hours at a time with no activity. From a logical perspective this is completely impractical and the people that do the jobs are expected to be the zen masters that just put up with it. The really practical ones end up over-cleaning and over-sorting everything because they need something to do with their meaningful lives.

Then the consumer comes along and suddenly life is good again, they have something to do.

This is completely insane.
