As a Journalist for almost a decade, travelling is a second nature. Travelling detoxify work-related stress and gives me new ideas for unique and wonderful stories.

Last week, I was invited to a 3-day-all expenses paid vacation in Negros Occidental in Central Philippines. It's an hour via plain from the capital Manila.

Negros Occidental is one of the two provinces of the defunct Negros Island Region. It was returned to Region Seven or Central Visayas.

Unlike Oriental which speaks Cebuano, one of the many predominant dialects in Central and Southern Philippines, Occidental is mostly Ilongo. Not to worry, Filipinos are good in English.

Occidental is much more progressive than in its neighbouring province. It boasts of its history and world class foods.

But what made my trip extra memorable were the places we visited with friends and fellow leaders in our business. Two of our mentors paid for our trip.

First, stop was Mambukal Resort, an hour drive from the Bacolod City. The Local Government of Mambukal manages the 26 hectare reserve which boasts of its natural and man-made attractions.

Compared to other resorts in the province, Mambukal stands out to be a top choice for afternoon breaks and weekly relaxation with its majestic view.

Mambukal offers a nature getaway for city dwellers that is a few minutes’ drive from the big cities in the area.

Aside from their lush forest, Mambukal also has a hot spring from the nearby Kanlaon Volcano, which recently came very active.

The hot spring has been developed to make the terrain safe and to accommodate more visitors. An entrance fee of P50 - P100 are fair compensation for the very relaxing experience you'll have from the spring.

Mambukal also offers a few hours of trekking through 7 falls located in the mountainous area of the reserve. The first 3 falls can be reached within 30 minutes of walking in the middle of the forest through the help of local guides.

The first 3 falls are average compared to several other falls I have seen in my travels. Swimming is not allowed at the falls due to the strong current.

One could also try walking on a hanging bridge spread through a portion of the reserve. Unfortunately, since 2013 when Super Typhoon Hayan ravaged the country, the attraction was damaged and has since closed.

The reserve also offers average service and rooms with their very helpful staff. Visitors can stay for a few hours or try availing of their accommodations. They have small and family rooms to choose from. The resort also has a tent area where backpackers can camp out for the night.
