San Marino: a city on the mountain
San Marino is one of the most unusual cities in Italy.
Architecture, topography and views from above are remembered for a long time ...
Morning.
We arrived here late at night and unfortunately, not for long.
In the meantime, we were greeted by the warm sun and the awakening city.
Here it is - the top of Monte Titano, on which in 301 the stone quarry Marino and his friends formed a Christian community.
The fortifications of San Marino - its fortresses Guaita, Places and Montale - are clearly visible.
Had breakfast on verandochke
and, having said goodbye to the hotel, we went to the historical center of the Republic - a city with the same name.
The area of the city is very small, and the whole country is 60 square kilometers just ...
Barely found a parking lot.
On the rooms at the arms of the coat of arms of San Marino - three towers on Mount Titano, crowned with a crown (a symbol of sovereignty).
Stomp up
and still stomping ..
The historical center of the city is located at the foot of the mountain inside the fortress walls.
Linked fortifications now - these are colorful quarters and a lot of nooks.
The fact that the city is a fortress historically is understandable and immediately visible.
By the way, the population of the capital is just over 4 thousand people.
Of course, what amazes you - these are the views of the surroundings from the mountain.
It is unfortunate that the foothills were in a haze.
The castles and several villages lying at the foot were not very clear.
But all the same: the spirit captures!
Since 2008, the entire historic center of San Marino and Monte Titano have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I personally liked the Sanmarin shingles!
I read that the Sanmarins are very friendly and sociable, tactful and always ready to help, but most value the family.
Perhaps this is so, because here for centuries, no one was denied shelter and help.
And during the Second World War, the Republic of San Marino, declaring neutrality, opened its doors to more than one hundred thousand refugees.
In the narrow streets full of shops with really cheap leather goods.
And still there is often heard a Russian speech.
If not for a variety of modern signs, it is possible to feel yourself somewhere in the Middle Ages ...
We climb a little higher ...
And on the clouds we go to the city square ..
In the middle of it there is a statue of Liberty, behind which stands the Government Palace ..
On the head of Liberty are the same three towers of San Marino.
The statue was given to the city as a gift by the German countess Wagener in the 19th century.
We wanted to go inside, but the colorful chopovtsy did not let us in)
But we did not take offense, and walking around the city again, and, having bought all sorts of stuff,
said goodbye to the city.
By meadows and olive fields we went to travel further in Italy.
Do not switch, I'll show Venice soon!

Very beautiful and picturesque. I appreciate history and the preservation of it. As a culture sadly we embrace the McDonald's mentality rather than embrace what others have left is to treasure. Again thanks.
Thank you for your words!
