Traveling around Colombia - Whale watching on the Pacific coast!

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

A few years ago me and my family went backpacking for two months through Colombia. During our trip we visited the famous Parque Tayrona, the beautiful city of Cartagena, Colombias capital Bogotá and many other places. And although I really liked all of this places and think that Colombia is an awesome country, visiting the small fishing village of Juanchaco and seeing humpback whales and their calves for the first time in my life, was my absolute highlights of this trip!

Juanchaco, Buenaventura, Colombia

To get there, we left from Buenaventura and took a speedboat to Juanchaco. This little village is located on the Pacific coast in the Uramba Malaga Bay Natural National Park. We didn't plan to stay many days there, so the next day in the morning we already booked the boat tour to observe the whales.

After a short lecture about the National Park and the humpback whales from one of the tour guides, we and around 15 other people got into a small boat and drove out to the open ocean for about 20 minutes. To protect the animals, it was only allowed to stay in their vicinity for a limited time and according to the law a minimum distance of about 300 meters had to be kept.

As soon as we were near the whales, we quickly realized that it was not always clear where the whales were and with a little luck, they suddenly dived out of the water right next to the boat!

Humpback whales and their calves

We were lucky and saw around eight Humpback whales with calves. Some of them even jumped out of the water or raises their giant tails and fins in the air. I was totally impressed by the natural spectacle and couldn't stop taking photos!

Anyone who is visiting Colombia between July and November, should at least once attend this spectacle. Watching these giants from close up is an event that you should not miss and that you will always remember!
