Day Trip to Oak Bluffs (Martha’s Vineyard) 06.29.2017

in #travel7 years ago

Yesterday was the Golden Birthday of my dearest friend and fellow Steemit user @misskitty!!!! To celebrate this auspicious occasion, she decided that she would like take a day trip to one of the local islands in southern New England. After careful consideration it was decided that we would take the ferry from Woods Hole, Massachusetts to Martha’s Vineyard!!!

In particular she decided that we would spend the day in Oak Bluffs, due to its high concentration of other people of color, we felt that we would fit in a lot better there than say for instance Block Island. Something else that me the decision that much easier was the cost of the ferry to MV as opposed to Block Island (which was $8.50 each way per person, parking and shuttle each way to the ferry was another $15.00, making in all $49.00 for 2.)

It being her Golden Birthday, I was not about to let her pay, and paid for almost all expenses that day with my Shift Pay card which is linked to my LTC wallet on Coinbase.

Here is a picture of us on the ferry to Vineyard Haven

I took the following pictures from the rear deck of the ferry to Vineyard Haven.

Some Tall Ships that were docked in the Harbor of Vineyard Haven on our approach to MV.

After getting off the ferry, we decided to rent some bikes and take the scenic route to Oak Bluffs, this was very interesting as I have not ridden a non-stationary bike in about 18 years!! I was super confident when we got the rental but it took a good few minutes before I felt comfortable again.

Our intended path to Oak Bluffs!! There are bike lanes on the side of the road, bikes are fairly common and the friendly atmosphere of the island promotes a no-rush attitude on the part of the drivers and we were given way plenty of times while on our way to breakfast. While on our journey we stopped to each consume 150 micrograms of Lucy procured last summer from a super reputable vendor on the dark interwebs.

Something I knew that @misskitty would like would be to see the cottages whilst tripping. For those of you who don’t know, MV has some really interesting cottages, they are very small, and often painted very ‘loud’ colors and they look like doll houses!!!

Entrance the the “Doll House Village”

The “Iroquois House”

The “Fun House”

The 'Ichler' House with some refreshing Del's Lemonade, a Rhode Isalnd Original

The “Pink” House

We met the owner of the house doing some light repairs and touch up painting on the house and asked if we could take a picture with it, he was more than happy to oblige. We asked him if he liked owning the pink house and he replied “ It’s not mine it’s my wifes, and I’m tired of everytime I’m here working on it, ladies pass by and comment how ‘it’s good to see a man displaying so much PINK!!!’” Needless to say we were tripping and had a good laugh at that one!

An old Volkswagen Bug, overgrown with weeds, we had to take a picture!!!

After a long day of bike riding and touring the island, we decided to return the bikes back to the rental spot and grab some dinner and head home. We were super tired and decided to pay $2.50 each to take the bus back to Vineyard Haven to drop off the bikes and grab some food.

After returning the bikes, we stumbled on a store called “The Cat’s Meow’ and of course @misskitty had to take a look!! Inside we met the most interesting lady, who was the store’s owner. @misskitty and her struck up a conversation while I just stood there looking around looking at things. After a few minutes @misskitty picked up a souvenir T-Shirt and posed with the store’s owner to commemorate the occasion.

We stopped to enjoy a well-deserved meal, Shrimp Po’ Boys!!!!

On the 8:30pm ferry home exhausted from a long day of bike riding and sightseeing!!!

Not for nothing, I would HIGHLY recommend a visit to MV, especially the Oak Bluffs area to any of my followers who are either people of color themselves or really comfortable around them. Its super relaxed and recreational marijuana is legal in Massachusetts so there really isn’t any reason to go if you are in the area. However we brought our own and would expect it to be expensive on the island, but there are tons of black people around so you might be able to find some if you’re desperate.

If I were to go back I would most definitely rent a house for the weekend and invite as many friends as possible to come thru. The ferry cost is affordable to almost anybody and once you are there prices aren’t that expensive if you know where to go (Cumberland farms convenience store) and try to avoid the touristy places, but we didn’t and probably only spent a couple hundred bucks for the day, which was well worth it considering all the pleasant memories made.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my very first day as a former wage slave!!!
