Blumenau or: Am I really in Brazil?

how was your day? I was questioned why I chose Brazil to live. In this country, you will find so many diferent influences of culture, architecture etc, that in ten years, I still won’t have seen everything. I don’t even have to travel to Germany when I want to feel a little bit of my homeland. I can go to BLUMENAU, a city in the South of Brazil, so here are some facts I want to share with you.

Blumenau already sounds German, doesn’t it? It is locates in the South of Brazil and even was founded by Germans, Dr. Hermann Otto Bruno Blumenau and some more Germans, in 1850.

Compared to my City Belo Horizonte is it much smaller (Population Belo: 2,5 mio habitants – Blumenau: 302.000 habitants).

So imagine, you are a German and don’t want to live in Germany anymore and you move to a country that you, lets be honest, only knew from the TV before moving there. Or Youtube. All your friends say “Go to Blumenau, you will love it!”. But arriving there, you will get flashed! You look at your beer, at your cachaça, I mean, your….juice. Lets say juice^^, and you start to question yourself if this juice maybe was too strong, if all this just is a dream. Everything there is exactly like in Germany! The Streets are much better than in my City and the drivers show a similar behaviour like in Germany!

The buildings are very similar to the buildings in Germany.

Compared to other cities I have seen, Blumenau seems very organized and even the Human Development Index said that it has a higher life quality than other cities in this country, due to a high level of (Textil) Production, like “Hering”.

But not only clothes, but also the sector of the Craftbeer production has expanded a lot. There is no supermarket in Brazil where you can’t buy “Eisenbahn”.

If it wasn’t so hot there in the summer, you really could believe, you were in Germany.
Okay, that sounds nice but you still are not convinced that Blumenau is like Germany in Brazil? So, let me explain what happened when I asked somebody for the way. They spoke in….German! What? Yes, German. Well, a oldfashioned German, but still German. This is because until today, the people of that region maintain the culture and language of their ancestors, who were Germans. Even in schools it is taught.

So, we have a city in which the people speak German, have the same architecture and the same culinarian…Anything missing? Ah, yeah, for all the partylovers: Blumenau, of course, has its own Oktoberfest! That’s right. And it even is the second biggest one after the original in Munich. And well organized, that I can tell you

So, you thought you knew Brazil? I was fascinated of this region and I am already excited to get to know other regions, cultures, etc. See you :)

Wie geht es euch? Ich wurde schon öfter gefragt, warum ich ausgerechnet in Brasilien lebe. In diesem Land gibt es so viele verschiedene Einflüsse von Kultur, Architektur, etc., dass ich selbst in 10 Jahren noch nicht alles gesehen habe. Ich muss nicht einmal nach Deutschland reisen, wenn mich das Heimweh packt. Im Süden Brasiliens gibt es eine Stadt namens BLUMENAU, die reicht völlig aus!

Blumenau klingt ja schon deutsch, oder? Kein Wunder also, dass sie 1850 von dem Deutschen Dr. Hermann Otto Bruno Blumenau und weiteren Deutschen gegründet wurde. Verglichen mit meinem Wohnort Belo Horizonte ist Blumenau weitaus kleiner (Belo: 2,5 Mio Enwohner – 302.000 Einwohner Blumenau).

Stellt euch nun vor, ihr habt Deutschland satt und zieht in ein Land, das ihr vorher, wenn ihr ehrlich seid, eigentlich nur aus dem Fernsehen kennt. Oder Youtube. All deine Freunde raten dir, Blumenau zu besuchen. Aber wenn du dann dort ankommst, bist du erst einmal völlig überwältigt. Du betrachtest dein Bier, deinen Cachaça - ähm, Saft, sagen wir Saft – und du fragst dich, ob der Saft nicht ein wenig zu stark war und alles nur ein Traum sei. Alles ist exakt wie in Deutschland! Die Straßen sind in einem besseren Zustand als in meinem Wohnort und alle haben einen deutschen Fahrstil.

Nichts zu sehen von der Wut großstädtischer Autofahrer. Auch die Architektur unterliegt einem starken deutschen Einfluss.

Verglichen mit anderen brasilianischen Städten, wirkt Blumenau sehr strukturiert und auch der Human Development Index besagt, dass Blumenau eine hohe Lebensqualität aufweist, vermutlich aufgrund der angesiedelten (Textil-) Produktion wie die Marke „Hering“. Doch nicht nur der Kleidungssektor ist wichtig, sondern auch die Craftbeer-Branche. Hier gibt es keinen Supermarkt, in dem man kein „Eisenbahn“ kaufen kann. Wäre es im Sommer nicht so unfassbar heiß, könnte man tatsächlich denken, man sei in Deutschland.

Das klingt ja alles ganz nett, überzeugt euch aber noch nicht, dass Blumenau sehr deutsch ist? Dann lasst mich erklären, was passierte, als ich jemanden nach den Weg fragte. Sie antworteten auf Deutsch! Bitte was? Ganz genau, auf Deutsch! Gut, ein sehr altes Deutsch, aber immerhin. Dies ist so, weil die Bewohner dieser Region, viele mit deutschen Vorfahren, bis heute die deutsche Kultur bewahren. Selbst in Schulen ist Deutsch teilweise Pflichtfach.

Wir haben also hier eine Stadt, die deutsch spricht, dieselbe Kultur hat und auch die gleiche Culinaria vorweist. Fehlt da noch etwas? Ah genau, für alle Partylöwen unter euch, es findet jährlich ein Oktoberfest statt! Und es ist riesig. Und wirklich gut organisiert, meiner Meinung nach sogar besser als das Münchener Original.

Du denkst also, du kennst Brasilien? Ich war wirklich fasziniert von Blumenau und freue mich jetzt schon darauf, neue Orte kennen zu lernen.
