Scintillating SE-LA
Se-la is a mountain pass located in the eastern Himalayas that connects Tawang to the rest of India. It is situated at a quite high altitude of 13700 feet above the sea level and that is why it is covered with snow almost through out the year. Se-la pass is also the gateway to one of the most exotic lakes in Arunachal Pradesh that is Sela lake. It is one of the 101 lakes located around this area which are revered by the Tibetan community. Nonetheless, Sela lake is not only popular due to its religious significance but also for its jaw dropping stunning beauty.
Sela was the best thing that happened to us in the entire 15 day long backpacking trip across Arunachal. Though we had a hard time making it to this place as we were mostly commuting by public transport like shared Sumos and Jeeps which do not halt at the Sela pass but drive across it. While traveling to Tawang from Guwahati via Bomdila we chose to halt at Bomdila for two days and tried either finding a group driving to Tawang to tag along or convincing a Sumo driver to halt at the lake and charge extra instead, but unfortunately all our efforts seem have gone in vain.
Quite evidently most of the travelers willing to visit Sela lake either hire a personal taxi or drive their own private vehicles to Tawang via Sela pass as the lake is spread across a vast area. One can choose to walk from one side by the rocky pavement besides the lake and reach the other side of the lake that opens up to the same road enjoying the different panoramic views or just digress down to one of the frozen edges of the lake and discern it closely.
