About Masai Mara

Maasai Mara National Reserve is an region of preserved savannah wilderness in south western Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. Animals include lions, elephants, cheetahs, wild buffallo zebras and hippos. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. The landscape has grassy plains and rolling hills, and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers. The area nearby is dotted with villages of Masai people.

History Of Masai Mara

Kenya was one such British colony, from 1888 to 1962. In 1961, an area of 520 sq kms was known as a wild life sanctuary. Soon it was expanded as a game reserve of 1821 sq kms, run by the Narok County Council. Kenya got independence in 1963 and realised that tourism could be a major source of revenue. Hence, in 1974 Masai Mara was declared a National Game Reserve.
