After visiting Königssee and Zugspitze, both of us were exhausted. Therefore, on the fifth day of our “Austria X Germany Journey”, we decided to relax a bit and just wandered around in the Munich city center.
First stop was the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) located in Marienplatz at the center of the old town. The Marienplatz commemorates that St Mary showered patients suffered from cholera with blessings. A marble memorial statue with a golden sculpture of St Mary on its top stands at the center of the plaza.

The Neues Rathaus is a gothic architecture built in the 19th century, with sculptures of the Bavarian King, Fable, Hero and Saint in the front. It consists of a city council, office of the mayor and a part of administration departments. With a clock tower of 85 meters tall and the Germany’s largest puppet clock, it attracts lots of tourists to watch the famous puppet show played by 32 man-sized puppets at 11am, 12nn, 5pm and 9pm everyday. The show is about the wedding ceremony of William V in 1558, and lasts for 10 mins. You may pay to overlook Munich from the top of the tower. We were not very interested and didn’t go haha!

St Peter Kirche was our next stop. It’s the oldest church in Munich. Built in 1050, completed in 1294, expanded in the 17th century. The church initially consisted of two gothic towers. Due to fire, it was reconstructured in the 18th century and transformed into a Baroque architecture in Rococo style themed in white and golden colours. Destructured by wars in WWll, it was rebuilt completely till 2000.

The atmosphere inside was not gloomy. The white ceiling brightened the inner part of the church. Sunlight was reflected by the coloured windows. A sense of tranquility was felt.
There was a scenic viewpoint at the top of the tower where tourists can pay to overlook the scenery. You can possibly see the Alps in sunny weather!
Soon we were getting hungry! In a second we arrived the largest traditional food market in Munich - the Viktualienmarkt! Transformed from a farmers’ market to a popular food market, the Viktualienmarkt enables you to find lots of food stalls. Some of them sell traditional German food such as schnitzel (fried pork chop) and sausages. You may also find cheese, raw meat, vegetables, fruits and olives here. The market is small but more than enough!
This stall attracted us with its traditional german food! Looks delicious! Bought a schnitzel, curry sausages and bread. The curry sausage matches well with the sourness and spiciness of ketchup and curry powder! Cool!
We took a stroll in the English Garden of which we thought to be Hofgarten haha! Very relaxing! Some people sunbathed here as we did! A good place to chill out!
At night we paid a visit to the famous Hofbräuhaus München! Termed as the largest brewery in the world, it accommodates 3500 people! Super huge! Built in 1589, the HB was once a brewery. Noticed that its beer had grown its popularity, the King Ludwig I demanded to open a beer restaurant in it to popularize its beer!
Having established for four centuries, it had attracted lots of famous people and written their history. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Vladimir Lenin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were visitors of the HB. Hitler also publicly proclaimed the well-known ‘25-point Program’ here.
Crowded and noisy inside! We found our seats ourselves.)
Almost everyone ordered a glass of beer! Listening to the performance of the orchestra was very delightful!
The ceiling was decorated by beautiful and elegant paintings with classical elements!
(馬上點了一杯白啤酒 (Weißbier)試試!Can’t wait to try the White beer here!)
Pork Knuckle is a must-try dish in Germany! Not a big portion. The skin was hard rather than crispy. The meat is fair enough. The potato dumpling was quite strange to me. Hard to describe its texture! It didn’t taste like potatoes at all! My girl @connieleung hates it very much haha! Another dish was the barbecued pork, the texture and the sauce are quite good.
That’s it, we had a relaxing day in Munich, and we’re ready for the journey afterwards!
