Stepping on the ancient Roman city ruins in Algeria

in #travel6 years ago

Stepping on another ancient Roman city in Algeria. SO IMPRESSIVE! I am in love with this architecture! City of Timgad is one of the finest Roman Empire ruins which survived. I was walking on the real streets which have hundrets of years, the gate, theater and even the toilet! IMG_0827.jpg

The city is big and unfortunetely, pieces of destroyed architecture are everywhere. This is actually the worst part of it - people still don't see the value of this heritage, they jump on every possible column or tomb to make a picture.

Tle alley from the entrance leads through the statues from the graves. It was peculiar to see that the grave stone has a face of the the dead person and on the bottom food for him! carved from stone. The food was changing from one grave to another, so maybe it was what the person liked to eat the most?IMG_0784.jpg

Later there are ruins of the Great Baths. A huge building made out of the bricks, so different than all the other parts of the city - made out of the stone. The baths consisted of 40 rooms, built simetrically. Rooms consisted cold or hot water, latrines, spaces to relax after the bath and the cold room with an icy plunge pool.

Te alley leads through the remains of the houses. The water canals still running after my feet, I can the water through the holes. Going straight leads to few inscription boeards in Latin, which worship Cezar. Later, I came to the theater.
It was built in the 160s by cutting into a hillside and had seating for as many as 3500 people in its rows. From the theater I could see great view at the whole ruins!

The most impressive remain in Timgad is the Trojan's Arch. It's a huge gate with 3 arches. The main one was reserved for chariots and the two on the sides for perastrian.

Even though I have visited lots of ancient cities they never stop to impress me. I am still looking to see more. Next station will be Tipaza! Have you visited some ancient ruins which you can recommand?IMG_0806.jpg
