Sri Lanka 2017 - Chilling in Unawatuna in the South Coast

in #travel7 years ago

So here we are after 7 months working our butts off in the Okanagan Valley wine region of British Columbia, we are finally on holidays again!!!

It was a long and exhausting trip getting here complete with a sprint through Hong Kong airport, a 25 MINUTE layover, AND lost luggage. But eventually we made it safe and sound to Negombo, Sri Lanka. After 36 excruciating hours in limbo, we were finally reunited with our backpacks and our holidays could truly begin!!!

Whats the first thing we did, you ask!? We celebrated with a full body ayurvedic couples massage and LOTS of beers!

First things first, we headed straight for the Jasmine Villa Ayurvedic Resort.. It’s a stunning, two-story ayurvedic center complete with wooden steam chambers and a lotus pond in the central courtyard. We were shown to our couples room which was a lovely, high-ceilinged room with exotic wood decoration and an open window facing the beautiful grounds. There was no music, instead we were soothed by the sounds of the wind rustling through the trees and the songs of the exotic birds outside the window. As we finally relaxed our stressed and tired muscles, thunder started to rumble overhead and the rain started to fall on the leaves outside. What an incrediblly relaxing way to spend an afternoon!

We left blissed out and thirsty, so we headed back to our guesthouse, the Astoria Residences in Negombo, to wash away the oil and wait out the storm. When the rain subsided we went to our favorite little restaurant in Negombo, the Machang to people watch from their patio and enjoy a few Lion Lagers, one of the local brews. We love it there because the service is great, the food is varied and delicious, and the drinks are COLD (a rare comfort in the clinging humid heat of the tropics).

Now that we had our bags back, we were ready to hit the road, so first thing the next day we headed for the bus station and started the journey to the South Coast.

Unawatuna was our destination for the day and it’s a peaceful little retreat from hectic Columbo and the hustle and bustle of the other coastal towns along the way. We think it will be VERY hard to leave this place behind!

Unawatuna is a beautiful little stretch of palm-fringed golden sand with stunning aquamarine waters and rollings waves that beckon you to join them. We’re here early in the season so the prices are still low and we’ve been luck to find a wonderful little place called Amma’s Guesthouse to call home.. It’s only $16 CAD a night and we’re right across the street from the beach with a patio and a view of the rolling waves.

Honestly the pictures don't even do it justice!!!

There was snow on the mountaintops around Kelowna before we left, made it so easy to leave!!! Winters in BC are stunning though and so worth braving the cold!
