Myanmar Series 03 - Golden Rock

in #travel6 years ago

Today I show you the famous Golden Rock. Sitting on the top of a mountain. The little Stupa on top is called the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. The Rock itself is sitting on the very edge of a cliff, almost falling down. Legend says it is hold in place by a hair of Buddha.

It has been there for a very long time, as you can see from this photo, taken in 1900. It is well worth visiting this marvelous rock, that has been covered in gold by devoted Buddhist over the years.

Word of advice: As a woman you are not allowed to touch the stone.

Why women are not allowed to hold it, why is it ...?

Because women are considered unclean :( (they might have their "days")
As with so many other religions, buddhism is not exactly seeing women as equals. Despite their believe that any human will (or can) take any form eventually in the wheel of rebirth.
