Travel with me #1: A visit to Novo Mesto - Arhaelogical gem in the middle of Europe

In first edition of Travel with me, we'll be visiting city of Novo Mesto, an arhaelogical gem in the middle of Europe.

Novo mesto is the city on a bend of the Krka River in the City Municipality of Novo Mesto in southeastern Slovenia, close to the border with Croatia. The town is traditionally considered the economic and cultural centre of the historical Lower Carniola region.

The city itself has been setled since pre-history. The city is one of the most important archeological sites of the Hallstatt culture (Early Iron Age) and has been nicknamed the "City of Situlas" after numerous situlas found in the area.

The old city core of Novo mesto is impressive with its magnificent Main Square, with arcade hallways fronting the ground floors of old town houses and the dominant Town Hall. Also worth visiting are the St. Nicholas Cathedral and the Franciscan Church, the Museum of Dolenjska and the Jakčev dom gallery (Jakac House). Especially stunning is the row of houses perched on the riverbank – na Bregu. The city can also be seen from a different perspective – from a raft run by Rudolf or Nika.

In addition to the natural beauty of this wine-producing country boasting forests, rivers, fields and karstic caves visitors can enjoy the rich cultural heritage of the region. Visit the Otočec Castle, Mokrice Castle and Kostanjevica na Krki, Pleterje Charterhouse open-air museum, Jakac Gallery, and the Museum of Dolenjska with its extensive archaeological collection in Novo mesto. Those who enjoy live performances can see one at the Anton Podbevšek Theatre or attend one of many other events taking place in the city.

The Krka River Valley

Many people would argue that the Krka Valley, especially above Novo mesto, is the most beautiful Slovenian river valley. Its beauty is highlighted by soft riverbanks, picturesque rapids and natural dams. Further adding to its charm are the numerous mills and castles that dot its course, pilgrimage trails and forests offering a wealth of activities, from fishing and hunting to the harvesting of forest fruits and fishing.

Natural landmarks

The green nature in and around Novo mesto with the Krka River is both mysterious and enchanting. High above the city loom the mythical hills of Gorjanci, home to dwarfs and bears alike. Bees buzzing across the land produce the delectable honey of Dolenjska. And no festive meal is complete without the local speciality – štruklji (rolled dumplings).

Also I need to add, food here is fantastic. I would recommend anyone who visits Novo Mesto to go and try food at pizzeria "Chianti".
