Hello to all my dear readers! Today I have, perhaps, the most voluminous publication in terms of the number of photos in the entire history of blogging. We are completing our journey through the forts of Kronstadt and there is a final article on this topic about the Reef Fort.
INFORMATION FROM THE WEB: The Reef Fort is located in a surprisingly picturesque place, on the western tip of Kotlin Island. Due to the good preservation of the fortifications, the Reef Fort is of great interest to fans of military history and fortification. "Reef" is the most powerful fortification of the Kronstadt fortress. From here you can enjoy beautiful views of the "Seal Ridge" and Tolbukhin Lighthouse — the oldest lighthouse in Russia. The Reef Fort is included in the UNESCO Heritage List.
During the few hours that we walked through the ruins of the fort, we saw an incredible number of different sights. I will not mention them, but today I will tell you about other places that we found there.
I knew that somewhere among the abandoned fortifications there were entrances to the underground parts of the fort, but it was not easy to find them so easily. And only once did the sister notice a group of people who were led by a guide, and they were heading towards some kind of rusty inconspicuous door.
We immediately followed and instantly plunged into the atmosphere of forgotten and abandoned casemates. A rusty door led down stairs and then the passage divided into a series of lighted corridors.
Yes, there was artificial lighting everywhere and it wasn't even as creepy as it might have seemed at first. However, the cleanliness of the corridors here is very conditional, there are signs everywhere so as not to get lost or run into a dead end. And it was very possible to get lost in the dungeons of the fort.
In some places, old rusty beds were installed along the narrow corridors, on which even blankets and mattresses were preserved. It seems to me that it was quite difficult to live here, because the local atmosphere is extremely depressing for a person, even if you imagine that once it was not as damp as it is now.
It was cold in the dungeons. Compared to the hot weather outside, there was relative grace here. However, the humidity of the dungeon atmosphere was felt on the skin, causing it to be covered with a layer of sticky moisture.
We wandered around the casemates for quite a long time, sometimes catching up with the group with a guide, then falling behind. When we got outside, even the hot summer air seemed intoxicating to us after the stuffy underground corridors.
That rusty slab over there with the strange holes is a kind of target. And the dents are the marks of bullets of different calibers. I think this thing has been used for its intended purpose a lot of times, and probably in different years it served at the local shooting range for training soldiers.
Among the photos in the article you can find a strange brick structure of an unusual oval shape. As the guide explained to us, this is a test installation for guns. To be honest, I didn't understand at all how it worked, but inside you could see the barrels of the guns embedded there. Somehow, the force of the shots was measured there and engineering artillery calculations were carried out.
Now the building is in very poor condition, there are cracks everywhere and a layer of earth on top with trees growing there. It was recently dug up because for many years this landfill was buried under a layer of soil. There are photographs on the stand nearby that show how this place looked in the past years.
And we still found some coastal guns, which are probably 150 years old or so. The guns are menacingly pointed towards the bay and look quite intact. Just such guns or even larger caliber have already been dismantled throughout the fort.
Our visit to the Western Kotlin was coming to its logical end. We looked at everything that was in these places. It was time to return to the parked car to go on to new adventures.
Soon we will visit the huge and beautiful Maritime Cathedral - the main Orthodox shrine of Kronstadt. There will also be a number of other attractions that we visited that day. But there will be publications about this a little later, but that's all for today!

СПРАВКА ИЗ СЕТИ: Форт "Риф" располагается в удивительно живописном месте, на западной оконечности острова Котлин. Благодаря хорошей сохранности оборонительных сооружений форт «Риф» представляет огромный интерес для любителей военной истории и фортификации. «Риф» самое мощное укрепление Кронштадтской крепости. Отсюда открываются прекрасные виды на «Тюленью гряду» и Толбухин маяк — старейший маяк России. Форт «Риф» включен в список наследия ЮНЕСКО.
За те несколько часов, что мы ходили по развалинам форта мы увидели невероятное количество разных достопримечательностей. О них я не буду напоминать, но сегодня расскажу о других местах, которые мы там обнаружили.
О том, что где-то среди заброшенных укреплений имеются входы в подземные части форта, я знал, но вот так запросто отыскать их было не просто. И лишь один раз сестра заметила группу людей, которые были ведомы гидом, и они направлялись в сторону какой-то ржавой неприметной двери.
Мы тут же отправились следом и мгновенно погрузились в атмосферу забытых и заброшенных казематов. Ржавая дверь вела ступеньками внизу а потом проход разделился на ряд освещённых коридоров.
Да-да, здесь всюду светило искусственное освещение и даже не было так жутко, как могло бы показаться вначале. Правда, чистота коридоров здесь очень условная, везде висят таблички, чтобы не заблудиться или не упереться в тупик. А потеряться в подземельях форта было очень даже можно.
Кое-где вдоль узких коридоров были установлены старые ржавые кровати, на которых даже сохранились одеяла и тюфяки. Мне кажется, жить здесь было довольно тяжело, потому что здешняя атмосфера действует на человека крайне угнетающе, даже если представить, что когда-то здесь не было так сыро, как сейчас.
В подземельях ощущался холод. По сравнению с жаркой погодой снаружи здесь была относительная благодать. Правда влажность атмосферы подземелий ощущалась на коже, заставляя ту покрываься слоем липкой влаги.
Мы довольно долго бродили по казематам, то догоняя группу с гидом, то отставая. Когда мы выбрались наружу, даже жаркий летний воздух показался нам упоительным после душных подземных коридоров.
Вон та ржавая плита со странными отверстиями - это своеобразная мишень. А вмятины - это следы от пуль разного калибра. Думаю, эту штуку использовали по назначению очень много раз, и наверное в разные годы она служила на местном стрельбище для тренировки солдат.
Среди фотографий в статье вы можете найти странное кирпичное сооружение необысной овальной формы. Как нам объяснил гид, это испытательная установка для орудий. Честно говоря, я совершенно не понял, как она работала, но внутри можно было заметить стволы вмурованных туда пушек. Каким-то образом там замерялась сила выстрелов и велись инженерные артиллерийские расчёты.
Сейчас здание в очень плохом состоянии, всюду трещины и сверху слой земли с растущими там деревьями. Его недавно откопали, потому что долгие годы этот полигон был погребён под слоем почвы. На стенде рядом есть фотоснимки, которые показывают, как это место выглядело в прошлые годы.
А ещё мы всё-таки отыскали несколько береговых орудий, которым уже, наверное, лет 150 или около того. Пушки грозно направлены в сторону залива и выглядят вполне целыми. Как раз такие орудия или даже большего калибра уже демонтированы по всему форту.
Наш визит в "Западный Котлин" подходил к своему логическому концу. Мы осмотрели здесь всё, что только было в этих местах. Пора было возвращаться к припаркованному автомобилу, чтобы отправляться дальше к новым приключениям.
Вскоре мы побываем в огромном и красивейшем Морском соборе - главной православной святыне Кронштадта. Также будет ещё ряд достопримечательностей, которые мы посетили в тот день. Но об этом будут публикации чуть позже, а на сегодня у меня всё!
