There is a museum in Penang, the 'Pinang Peranakan Mansion' (http://www.pinangperanakanmansion.com.my/); 'Pinang' is the Malay reference to Penang (or 'Pulau Pinang' = Penang island) There! That should be enough reading material for you... :D
