Visiting Barcelona - Day 3: Sagrada Familia

The first thing you notice when visiting Sagrada Familia is that construction is still ongoing: the unfinished building should be completed around 2026-2028. Antoni Gaudí died in 1926 when only a portion was complete and after 100 years the project should be finshed, financed only through private donations.

In fact a big amount of the construction and maintenance costs are covered by ticket sales. We got our online tickets per mail and went straight to Sagrada Familia. The were lots of visitors outside, just as on the day before, but the queues at the entrance are quite short as the tickets are validy for a specific entry time. We arrived a few minutes earlier than the time mentioned on the ticket and were turned away and had to come back a few minutes later.

The good thing about this strict schedule and limited number of tickets is that inside the Sagrada Familia there is plenty of room and it never gets crowded.
Before you get in, you'll first have to present your tickets and then go through security check where your bags and belongings are scanned (just like it's done on airports).

Inside there are also areas under construction. It is also possible to visit the towers - two of them are accessible via elevators. Entry to the towers need a separate ticket though (which we did not get), so if you're planning to see Barcelona from one of those you'll need to buy a ticket with tower access included.
