Withernsea is a small town in Yorkshire, where we have celebrated Halloween 2018. We stayed at a caravan park which was a nice change to a usual tent.

The weather was mostly rubbish - wet and stormy. It is perfect for sea drama, but not so great for exploring the area.

One of the days we went into the town to view the Pier Towers. From aside, it looked just like a real castle. On closer inspection, it turned out to be a gate to the beach. And just like that, we were on the shore. But let's talk landmarks, shall we?

So the Withernsea Pier Gates are as old as 142 years (!!!). Doesn't look like it, does it?
It did not appear like it back in the days. It used to be a gate to the pier, which has been wrecked multiple times.... no, not by fire... by ships. In the end, the only part that remained was the gate.

I am grateful we can admire this unique structure these days. Spectacular, don't you think? And very unusual.

One particular sight can be found nearby, on the promenade. Take a look!

It reads:

APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE OFFSHORE
FROM THIS POINT LIES THE SITE OF
THE 13TH CENTURY
CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN
[one of the sisterkirkes]
LOST TO EROSION
BY THE MID 15TH CENTURY

We have tried to spot it in the stormy waves of the sea, but no luck.

Pier Gates was not the only landmark to admire. Even though the town is super duper tiny, it is home to a lighthouse in the middle of the residential area. How cool is that! I mean, where else can you get a bonus of two incredible sights in very unusual places.

Soooo, the lighthouse... Not functional anymore, just a museum and a tearoom at present. We did not get a chance to go in cause it is closed in the winter season. However, should you be interested here are some facts for you:

  • building dates back to 1892 (according to Wikipedia)
  • stopped doing whatever the lighthouse is built for by 1976 (again, referencing Wikipedia)
  • it is 39 meters tall
  • got a Trinity House plaque as seen on the picture
  • it is a Grade II listed building.

Just imagine what was it like living next to the lighthouse. Nights must have been fun.

And this was practically it. I hope you have enjoyed the story of Withernsea.
