Glogensky monastery in Lovech

in #travelfeed5 years ago (edited)

This is a Bulgarian monastery with Russian roots! It is located in an unusually beautiful place - only about a hundred kilometers from Sofia in the direction of Lovech, in the Teteven community on the slope of Mount Lisets. And although there are a lot of such beautiful places in Bulgaria, Glogene is already unusual in that, according to legend, it was founded by the Russian prince Glogy, who fled from the Tatar-Mongol yoke in the distant 13th century, to Bulgaria.

At first it was a settlement and a fortress, then a monastery, and later in the 18th century it was moved to the top of this rock and called “St. Georges the Victorious ”, in honor of the icon that Prince Glazhen brought with him from Kiev. The icon itself is now in the Love Metropolitanate, and a copy made in 1882 is exhibited in the monastery church.

Altitude 800 meters.

The monastery burned, was destroyed by earthquakes, it was regularly rebuilt and repaired. Previously, the monastery could be reached only through a very narrow manhole in the rock, so the Bulgarian revolutionaries were hiding here - the Turks could not get to them here.

You can spend the night in the Glogensky monastery - under monastic conditions and it’s quite acceptable to eat. All this is inexpensive: from 7 leva per night (3.5 euros).

Like all Bulgarian monasteries, during the time of the Turkish yoke, Glogensky also conducted active enlightenment activities and even maintained a school in a neighboring village.

Near the monastery there is a small paid parking - 2 BGN (1 euro), entrance to the monastery is free, entrance to the monastery museum costs 0.50 BGN (0.25 euro), photography is allowed for 4 BGN (2 euro), you can go to the toilet for 0.20 levs (0.10 euros).

The museum exhibits things of Metropolitan Clement, who spent 15 months imprisonment here.

I want to note that monasteries in Bulgaria are not only popular tourist sites and places of interest, they are also favorite vacation spots for Bulgarians: monasteries often have museums, hotels, restaurants, shops of monastery crafts and even playgrounds. The most beautiful monasteries in my opinion are located in the mountainous part of the country, for example, such as the Rila Monastery and Bachkovsky with Dragolevsky. By the way, they also keep Russian relics in their history and museums.
