Try this scenic railway ride if you're ever in Norway

This first picture I took somewhere on Bergen bana.

A scenic train ride Bergen Bana -> Flåmsbana.
Myrdal to Flåm is a 20 km railway ride, and one of the steepest in the world.
At the end is the beautiful Flåm Valley and Aurlandsfjord.

Flåmsbana is recognized as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, and I'm not sure why it took me almost 30 years to experience it for myself. I always recommend this trip to anyone coming to Norway.

A gif timelapse from a program (not my footage)

Inside the cabin.

Norwegians have got a knack for conserving stuff for a very long time.
Originally a steam locomotive, Flåmsbana upgraded in 1949 to electric EL9 locomotive, which remained in service for 35 years until this BM 69 multiple unit was introduced in 1984.

Tunneling through the mountains.

Flåmsbana was a major feat of enginneering for a railway project that began in 1904.
A total of 20 tunnels were dug, and a climb of 866 m., to get across the Flåm valley.

A scenic spot when the train has begun climbing the hillside.

Many people go hiking or cycling along Rallar Road. The train stops a few times to let hikers pass.

Some panoramic waterfalls.

A stop at station Finse

Some old memorabilia at the train station.

A hiking trail over the hill and down to the fjords on the other side.

Flåmdalen

The fjord

Aurlandsfjord is one of many branches of Sognefjord.

It has been almost 10 years since I went on this trip, and I want to go again soon with a better camera. Most of the photos I took with Motorola Droid (yes the first Droid:), and some with Panasonic DMC-LZ8. Some more pics and full size in this Album
