Fishing Redondo Beach Pier

Redondo beach pier is a famous pier located in southern California known for its restaurants, stores, and fishing. A couple years back I decided to go to the pier with some jigs and decided to throw them around for a while. This was probably about 2 summers ago.

I ended up catching some pacific bonito. Boy do they pull hard. I was using a medium setup with 15lb test and a kastmaster jig. I believe the jig was a 3/4 ounce or a 1/2 ounce gold kastmaster. Bonito bite all types of jigs though. People catch them on sabikis, kastmasters, p line laser minnows, krocodiles, and much more.

Bonito usually come around during the summer time and come in schools that like to come and go. They don't stay in one spot usually, and they move around very fast. They hit very hard as well, so when you get bit you don't really need to set the hook on them because they typically just eat the whole thing. They have very sharp teeth and these guys swim fast.

They are great eating if you bleed them out right after you catch them and leave them in some ice and water. They are good blackened. Some people even eat bonito sashimi. Of course the Japanese make flakes from this fish as well. Some people look at it as a junk fish but I find that it has very good eating qualities.

Fishing the pier can be fun but it can get very crowded and sometimes it is inevitable that you're going to get into a big tangle with someone. It takes a lot more patience to fish on the pier because it is harder to catch fish since there is a lot more pressure there compared to fishing the open ocean.

At redondo pier you can catch many different species such as mackerel, calico bass, halibut, bonito, smelt, and much more. However redondo pier is just too crowded for my taste and a bit too dirty in my honest opinion, so I typically prefer to fish in other spots.
