Trial by Comics "Magic: The Gathering" Avacyn, Angel of Hope!

in #trialbycomics7 years ago (edited)

It’s after 1:00a.m. and I just realized I have a post from last week that ends in 30 minutes. If that isn’t proof that I work best after midnight, I don’t know what is. It’s been a busy day, but I feel good about what I was able to get done. Some editing, some Magic beatings w/ @tarotbyfergus and @vermillionfox at @caffetto, and some drawing, of which I’m sharing here.

As most of you know, this week’s Trial by Comics theme is Magic: The Gathering. I’ve unapologetically said, the theme for the contest are chosen based on what I want to draw. Obviously, if you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you’ll know that MTG is a big part of my life. It’s not just that I love to play, though. It’s the art! Magic: The Gathering has one of the most catalogued collections of fantasy art on the planet, and that art is showcased in the cards.

One thing I really liked about a Magic: The Gathering theme was that I knew it would force most participants to draw something before the deadline. With “Super-heroes” and “Super-villains”, it’s likely any artist is sitting on that Batman or Joker sketch they did a few years ago. With MTG, most likely, to enter you’d have to come up with new art of the creatures or planeswalkers of the game.

The Trial by Comics hashtag is so active, I’m outright inspired by the level of participation, especially for the theme that I expected to only see a few entries! I thought it would take six months or more for Trial by Comics to get any real momentum, and I couldn’t have been more wrong. I’ll save my favorites for the contest winner announcement, but a round of applause for all the artists that are making this event such a success.

I’ve been so inspired that I decided to enter my own contest, in addition to the Erebos, God of the Dead I drew for the theme announcement last week. Don’t worry. I’m not eligible to win […but even if I was, I wouldn’t even vote for my own artwork to win over a few of my favorite entries thus far]. I was just so happy about it, I decided to do a sketch of Avacyn, Angel of Hope. My Commander in my angels and equipment EDH deck. I’ve been wanting to draw Avacyn for some time and this was the push I needed to do it.

Artwork was done on the iPad Pro using Apple Pencil and Procreate. Thank you again to every one that’s entered so far, and the previous weeks. I couldn’t be happier with how Trial by Comics is going! Here’s a speed drawing of the entire sketch. Enjoy.

I post daily. For more illustration, photography, art and the stories behind the work, follow me here @kommienezuspadt.

This is great. I love how traditional the pencils look. Gotta get me an iPad Pro! Cheers for sharing! BTW how long did the drawing take?

OMG!!! O_O

You´re one of my reason to keep fighting in Steemit that drawing
it´s so AMAZING!!!! Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood
I´m inspired

This drawing is gorgeous. She has such presence.

I definitely almost drew her as well, but as I was working in my tiny sketchbook, I decided I didn't have room for her glorious wings. haha

Wow man you are great artist, amazing drawing

Thanks @anonimous! That means a lot. My illustration usually plays second fiddle to my photography, but comics is where my heart is.

This is an amazing artwork @kommienezuspadt. Didn't know that such detailed artwork can be created using Apple Pencil and great video on the drawing process. Will explore that approach going forward. I am really enjoying the contest so far. Have a great day!

Oh, man @apprentice001! You have to get your hands on an iPad Pro. It's definitely the best digital drawing tool on the market. Zero latency and no air gap between the glass, plus the tilt sensor for shading in the pencil is magical.

Will definitely consider it, I think it creates a very unique effect. Have an awesome day!

Memories flashbacks :). I played this game as teenager, i even tried to collect the angels as much as my tiny budget would allow me. I still have the cards well hidden in my parents place need to look at them on next visit. Amazing drawing. I wish I had a skill to contribute to competition. I will be checking the hashtag to see more talent. Well done.

Angels are definitely expensive, @mitchhunter. I discovered that as I started building this Avacyn Commander deck. Yeah! Break those cards out. Take some photos! I'd love to see what gems you have. Thanks! The contest is doing so much better than I would have ever imagined.

Yes, I need to organize them and see if I have any rare cards. They are Urzas Legacy as far as I remember or from around this time.

wow thats so cool I never knew the touchpad tablets or whatever were so good for drawing like that. Is there like a record feature so it records the video of the drawing process for you? Or did you have to keep stopping to take your own photos or screen shots? Also thanks so much for this trialbycomics MTG contest. Whats the contest that ended 30 mins after this post your mentioning above?

a real miracle.

wow it was fantastic that character I do not know how you can achieve such a good drawing on the iPad should be very difficult to sketch there, I think if you were competing you would be the winner, this several levels above our I think, I once played a game of letters similar, but do not continue for lack of people with the same interest and seen magic gathering very interesting, and maybe I encourage to play it e seen that you can play online but I do not know that such is

Well everything is ready the winner of the contest is: @kommienezuspadt ;)

You look very good if you were not the owner of the contest I bet you would be the winner.
