A Tale From The Not Too Distant Future

A boy looked out into the sky

He turned to his grandmother with a questioning sigh.

"If only I could reach the stars and visit planets like Jupiter and Mars"

She took his hand and gently replied,

"But you see my dear boy for many years we have tried.
We built zooming rockets to travel afar,
As a way of getting to the stars.
They were the brightest ships laden with great new tech.
We sourced the finest materials and stuck out our necks.
The best pilots were chosen to complete the mission,
People who could operate with careful precision.

But I'll tell you two reasons why this couldn't succeed;
The first is a lesson in power and greed,
The second a tale of a solitary seed."

The boy listened in wonder to the story of old.

Eagerly waiting for it to unfold.

Grandmother huddled him closer and spoke;

"Now what I am going to tell you is no joke.
When I was a child not much older than you,
We lived in a world with a different view.
The people did not care about the earth beneath their feet.
They took away it's essence to fulfill wants rather than their needs.
Some people grew fat while others went hungry.
We cared more about the value of a piece of paper called money.
The countries were divided each with their own orders.
Of how life should be lived within their borders.
They competed for dominance and to be the first.
They stole and they plundered from the essence of earth.
But as the earth cycles passed we saw we were wrong,
To take from the place of which we belong.
We are no different from the stars in the sky, the planets the cosmos that we see with our eyes.
We are all connected yet we chose to disconnect.
We realised this error when the last tree wept.
Food was scarce and the soil was deplete.
A barren brown wasteland of self defeat.
Scattered remnants of what money created,
A living hell born of hatred.

One particular morning a boy passing this way,
Saw something familiar between the brown and gray.
Tall and green, it glistened in the sun.
This one little tree became hope to everyone.
We all grouped together and decided to change,
The errors of our ways were completely rearranged.
So the world you now know is a far different cry,
And why we no longer care to visit the sky.
We watch from afar and thank the sun for its light.
We thank the moon, the stars and the planets at night.
For the beauty they give us to honor the gift of sight.
As you see dear boy our world is full of many shades of green.
Of oceans and lakes so beautiful and clean.
Of birds and of bees and creatures so diverse.
We are one and we are a special part of this great universe."

This is my first post since my family and I moved offgrid. Our internet is sporadic and I have missed Steemit and the communities I am grateful to be a part of. This poem is dedicated to all my Steemit friends and fellow community members.
