Impression of Tsunami In Baiturrahim Mosque Banda Aceh
Baiturrahim Mosque, Ulee Lheue, Meuraxa, Banda Aceh is a legacy of the Sultanate of Aceh in the 17th century. This mosque is one of the historic mosque in Aceh Darussalam, Indonesia.
According to historical records, in 1983 Banda Aceh was once rocked by a devastating earthquake and undermined the dome of Baiturrahim Mosque. After that the community rebuild this mosque but no longer install the dome, just a regular roof. Ten years later, a thorough renovation of the mosque was completed, leaving only the original building at the front post after the 1983 earthquake. The remaining ± 60 percent is a new building. Until now the original building of this mosque still looks solid on the front.
On December 26, 2004, an earthquake that followed the tsunami leveled the entire building around the mosque and the only remaining building and survived was the Baiturrahim Mosque. The condition of the mosque made of bricks only damaged about twenty percent so that the people of Aceh are very admiring this mosque as a symbol of the greatness of Allah (the Creator). The mosque is also designated as a zero point of tsunami.
Now this mosque became one of the popular tourist icon and a special attraction for the tourists both in and outside the country who visited Aceh.
