[TV Discovery] Kidding
Kidding is a new show from Showtime, created by Dave Holstein (a staff writer for Weeds), directed by Michel Gondry and starring Jim Carrey. This isn't Gondry and Carrey's first team up either, with the two working together on the loveably heartbreaking movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. As a teenager, Gondry was one of my favourite directors, with his film The Science of Sleep really connecting with me in a way no other film did at the time, but I'm going off on a tangent here. Back to the show I'm here to talk to you about, on the official Showtime website they say this:
“In his first series regular role in over two decades, Jim Carrey stars as Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television and a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him. But when this beloved personality's family begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale, fable or puppet will guide him through the crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.”
Official Showtime Synopsis
When I first saw the trailer, I was instantly reminded of Mr Rogers in Carrey's characters appearance and some of his demeanour, however this is quite clearly not Mr Rogers. Jim Carrey seems to have only received negative coverage in the press lately, with many speculating on his mental health, so it's great to see him taking up a role that seems to fit both who he is as an actor, and as a person. I never saw Ace Ventura, and wasn't that taken with The Mask, but some of Carreys later roles such as The Truman Show, the aforementioned Eternal Sunshine and even hit-and-miss horror film Number 23 proved that Carrey is an actor with a ride range, arguably on par with the great Robin Williams.
There isn't really a lot to talk about yet as the show doesn't air until September this year, but it's a definite warm welcome to this fall's programming. Make sure to check out the very Gondry-esque trailer up above, let me know your thoughts and feelings down below, and I'll see you in the comments. Always preferred Carrey's more dramatic roles, although I do love The Mask.
Yeah, The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine have to be some of my favourite roles of his. The Mask was the only one I enjoyed as a kid from his early comedy days, oh and dumb and dumber I guess too, but I don't think I could sit and watch them now. Nice to see him on the smaller screen too, I can't think of any TV shows he's starred in off the top of my head.
I know he was on In Living Color back in the day, but that's pretty much it. The first thing I saw him in was the film Earth Girls are Easy.
