This is another story that, upon reading the details, mostly vindicated my assumptions.
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/mar/14/eleanor-williams-jailed-lying-rapes-trafficking
It seems that Williams is mostly spending time in prison for ginning up hysteria via social media by taking advantage of concerns about illegal immigration. Namely, it's political. The three men who she directly accused of rape were probably an afterthought.
I was hoping that the UK was finally doing something right in regard to criminal justice that the US is still getting wrong (I was hoping, not assuming). It's a sick joke that Matt Ariza, Trevor Bauer, Brian Banks, Paul Nungesser, etc etc will never see the women who lied about being raped face any consequences.
I mean, even outside of the legal system, the media are generally fast and loose in naming the accused while concealing the identity of the accuser, even after the accuser is shown to have been lying. The only reason why we know the name "Emma Sulkowicz" because she made her lie a public piece of performance art.
The point has to be made that, whether or not a person who has been accused turns out to be guilty, the people who maintain the presumption of innocence are always right, and the people who presume guilt are always wrong.
