Ferris Wheel: The Heart of "Oak Grove" Park in the city of Zaporizhzhia
The Central Park of Culture and Recreation, known as "Oak Grove", located in the city of Zaporizhzhia, has been a prominent landmark and community gathering place since its official opening in 1959. The park, surrounded by lush trees and scenic walking paths, was designed to provide a relaxing and vibrant space for both residents and visitors, offering various attractions and leisure activities that have evolved over the decades.
One of the park's most notable features, the Ferris wheel, was first installed in the 1970s. At the time, it was one of the park’s premier attractions, offering riders panoramic views of the city and nearby landscapes. It quickly became a favourite among families, young couples, and tourists alike, operating for about 15 years before it was eventually dismantled. Recognising the popularity of the attraction, in 1986 the park decided to install a new Ferris wheel, this one 24 metres tall. This updated wheel continued to draw in crowds, enhancing the park’s charm and providing a picturesque addition to the skyline.
In the 1990s, the Ferris wheel was subjected to significant renovations to ensure its continued safety and functionality. The wheel’s cables were replaced with metal channel beams, which were produced at the renowned Zaporizhkran plant, based on engineering designs from a company in Kremenchuk. Additionally, tank wheels supplied by the Kharkiv Tank Plant were installed, lending further stability and durability to the structure. As part of these upgrades, it was also decided that the Ferris wheel would be repainted white, giving it a fresh, modern appearance compared to its original red finish. This update not only enhanced the visual appeal of the wheel but also symbolised a new chapter in the park's ongoing history as a beloved community space.
Today, the Central Park of Culture and Recreation "Oak Grove" continues to be a cherished destination, offering leisure, culture, and scenic beauty to all who visit.
