ULOG: The Art of Giving Back

in #ulog6 years ago

Every code has a story. This time, it's about giving back.

Have you ever been in a journey that you never would have continued if it wasn't for one person? Yes, there are others who have helped along the way, but there's this one person whose name stood above others? In my Steem journey, this person is Terry, a.k.a., @surpassinggoogle.

I've been spending these past few weeks thinking, re-prioritizing. What is it that I want? What is it that's important? And one thing that has been consistently coming back was "have you given anything back?" And my answer to that was a resounding "No!"

Terry has been in contact with me these past few days and I felt I haven't reciprocated enough the support he has given me when I was just getting started. I was "busy" with other stuff, but at the back of my mind, it was always "Terry, needs your help. Here's your chance." And there comes a point you act on it.

A Glimpse At Terry's Mind

There are a lot of things in Terry's mind and #ulog is just one of them. And I know how difficult and frustrating it is when you have something in mind that you can't see immediately (if only there was such a tool). And with the advent of different frameworks and existing open-source projects like busy, one no longer has the excuse to NOT have one's ideas come into fruition. Unless if you're a non-developer, and that's where we come in.

Ulog Development

I already submitted a few PRs to the ulog repository just to get the ball rolling and one of the challenges I saw was communicating what was in Terry's mind versus what's available.

It took a couple of messages before we were able to identify the appropriate component for the things he wanted done and these were the things that were so far completed.

  1. Top Nav Navigation
  2. Main Editor
  3. Ulogging Page

This was the first part of many. I converted the top write icon to a dropdown and then link this to other (some still non-existent) pages on the site.

2. Main Editor

This is still a work in progress, but the idea here is to have a specialized editor just for #ulogging. It contains all the information, tips, and guide to have one started #ulogging.

3. Ulogging Page

Another custom page where one's able to choose a different editor depending on the topic he or she wants to write about. #ulog, #be-like-terry, #surpassinggoogle are the main categories. For each category, you have a dropdown that will link you to the appropriate editor.
