my edit

A renewed desire to read.

Early last week I was scrolling through my feed when I came across a post by @aniatravels where she talked about her weekend in Portland. One of the things that she recommended to potential visitors was to check out Powell's city of Books, which is the largest new and used bookstore in the world that occupies an entire city block.

Immediately my imagination went to work as I envisioned myself tucked away inside the store sitting in a comfortable chair reading an old tattered book that carries that familiar sweet smell. In that moment I realized it had been far too long since I found a quiet place where I could escape to read.

You see, that quiet place is a bit hard to come by when you live in the city and have a 5 month old baby at home. Yeah you are right those are cheap excuses. To be frank, I lost the desire to read once I was introduced to podcast. Podcast quickly became my preferred option for absorbing new information.

I believe the biggest reason being that it allows me to multi-task. Each morning when I start my commute into work I will select a podcast to listen to and then begin browsing the different apps I frequent daily on my phone.

There is an argument that my method limits the amount of information I can retain as my attention is being divided by two different things, but in attempt to take full advantage of the limited amount of free time I have this is what works best for me. With that being said I am a fan of shaking things up from time to time so a trip to Barnes & Noble was added to my weekend agenda.

How do you decide what to read?

With an infinite amount of books out there to choose from I had no clue where to start so I decided to rely on two trustworthy sources. More often than not, when I am listening to a podcast it is The Joe Rogan Experience. His podcast offers a wide range of content from conversations about the universe with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to discussing with Michael Pollan how psychedelic's like Psilocybin are being used to treat conditions like depression and addiction with great success.

I decided to cross check Joe's latest recommendations on his podcast with the Amazon's Best Sellers List and there they were at #4 and #85 respectively. Let's hope in a couple of weeks from now I will be satisfied with my choices.

📕Book #1 - 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos by: Jordan B. Peterson

#1 NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

Like the best intellectual polymaths, Peterson invites his readers to embark on their own intellectual, spiritual and ideological journeys into the many topics and disciplines he touches on. It’s a counter-intuitive strategy for a population hooked on the instant gratification of ideological conformity and social media ‘likes,’ but if Peterson is right, you have nothing to lose but your own misery. - Toronto Star

📘Book #2 - Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by: Neil deGrasse Tyson

Over a year on the New York Times bestseller list and more than a million copies sold.

Tyson is a master of streamlining and simplification....taking mind-bogglingly complex ideas, stripping them down to their nuts and bolts, padding them with colorful allegories and dorky jokes, and making them accessible to the layperson- Salon

What is your favorite book you have read lately? Let me know if either of these books were on your reading list. Only time will tell if reading becomes a regular part of my life again. It has for now though and I'm looking forward to flipping some pages. 📖

Thanks for reading and enjoy the rest of your day! Remember to upvote, comment, and resteem!✌

If I weren't such a bookworm I'd probably have never joined steemit. I read a lot, and am glad it's helped me engage better. I actually prefer written to podcasts.

Writing on the other hand... That's my weakness

If writing is your weakness you are in the perfect place to get some practice. I myself have only written it college for the most part for class assignments so this is an opportunity for me to sharpen those skills as well.

How do you feel about audio books? I haven't given them a try, but I wonder if I would like them since I enjoy podcast.

They're great for an exam or test, if it's for leisure I still prefer written

Hmm then I may have to consider that option for my Strength & Conditioning certification that I have been putting off. Thanks!
