#ULOG : 004 - Preparing vaginal smears for microscope viewing
Today's errand is the Entertainers' check up day. This is a weekly endeavor at the health center to ensure that every woman working at night clubs are safe and sound. Hence, vaginal smears are waiting for my eyes to determine their stata. This is one way of controlling sexually transmitted infections in our town.
Those who are positive with the test will undergo antibiotic medication before they're given green cards for work.
Today I do my job in processing the submitted specimens.
Each specimen is placed on a slide, properly labeled, and air dried to fix. A midwife does the job. I am not allowed to be the one getting specimens from the ladies ofcourse.
When the slides are completely dried, I take the Giemsa stain and flood the specimens to absorb the stain perfectly. I wsit couple of minute before removing the excess stain.
Now, I wash it through running water to get rid of the excess stains.
Let it dry again.
Before reading it under microscope, I place a drop of immersion oil to vividly view the bacteria.
Place the slide on the stage of the microscope and tilt the objectives to Oil Immersion Objective.
And here is what I saw... This is an example of gram negative extracellular bacteria. This slide is positive.
All positive ladies must then indeego antibiotic treatment.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR DROPPING BY
