Nigeria "Heart of Africa" .. rich resources untapped
Nigeria, rich in natural resources, Africa's second-largest economy, its citizens are the "heart of Africa", with the largest population on the continent and the largest number of Muslims among African countries.
Under the British occupation, Nigeria entered the middle of the nineteenth century. Before that, the Europeans, led by the Portuguese, excluded millions of Nigerians from the mid-15th century and sent them to the Americas, the Caribbean islands and Europe before Nigeria gained independence from British colonialism in 1960.
Despite its 57 years of independence, Nigeria continues to suffer from many economic problems that persist from colonial times, mainly poverty resulting from the lack of optimal investment of the country's wealth in West Africa.
** Oil and youth
Nigeria's economy is heavily dependent on oil, shrinking 1.5% last year as the world oil price fell to its first annual decline in 25 years.
Oil accounts for one-third of Nigeria's GDP and 90% of its exports.
