EP. 6: University of Greatness – How to Become Great on Steemit without Pissing off a Whale (How to Become a Whale without Pissing off a Whale)
I can as well title this post “easy ways to piss off a whale and destroy steemit” or “how to become a whale the right way” but, hey I’m no-where near a whale yet so I don’t have the license to teach minnows like myself how to become a whale.
But I have good news which is; you can become a great steemian without actually becoming a whale. They are two different things but actually becoming a whale is good step toward becoming a great steemian.
Let’s face the truth; it feels good to rank top among the richest list of people on steemit, it feels good to publish a post and get hundreds of dollars worth of upvotes, it feels good to have thousands of followers and hundreds of comments on a single post, and it feels better to become a whale so we could help give many talented minnows get a lift when necessary.
But in our strife to achieve these milestones of steemit greatness many of us minnows get in our-own-way as @JerryBanfiled put it in his video “What stops us from making millions online and having the life of our dreams?”. Instead of becoming a whale, we ended up pissing off a whale that could help us become a whale faster.
Easy Ways to Piss off a Whale and destroy steemit
Beg for follow and upvote: a lot of minnows are caught in the trap of follow 4 follow, this was a strategy I planned to use myself once I get on steemit in order to amass a punch of followers quickly but, I’m grateful to God I met @joeyrocketfilms the day I did my introduction post and he told me to stay away off follow 4 follow because it’s a way to destroy my chances of becoming a great steemian.
The advice has really helped me a lot to change my approach towards steemit. When you beg a whale to follow you or upvote your post, you didn’t only piss him or her off, you as well just ruined your chances of getting a whale favor.
Masturbating on steemit the way you do on twitter: I love this phrase, it’s the best to describe how selfish most steemit users are becoming in the quest to become great/whale. I want to credit @stellabelle for coming up with this term and giving us suggestions to write on it.
Also I appreciate @therneau who did actually write a brilliant article on it which through that I was able to locate the original article from @stellabelle that inspired him.
Masturbation is a selfish act, relationship is cheerful act. When all you want is people to follow you without considering who they are, what they want and what their interest is, it is a wicked act.
And this might work on twitter but it doesn’t work on steemit, its going against the purpose of this platform and it could destroy our great community if every one of us follows this route.
Spamming comment sections with short and irrelevant comments: personally this act pisses me off and I feel like flagging every comment that is irrelevant to my actual post and reveals that the steemian didn’t even read the topic of the post before jumping to the comment section and putting a short comment that has no link with what I wrote.
Again many minnows are guilty of this and I promise you, this is the easiest way to piss off a whale and easily get flagged. When a whale gets you downvoted or flag your comment due to it irrelevancy to the actual post then your name might as well be finished or destroyed.
How do you become great the right way?
Date a beautiful girl instead of masturbating all day: this is one of the popular advices usually given to people who struggle with masturbation. To be frank, getting into a serious relationship can save you a hell lot of self destructions, same with steemit; instead of going around this community masturbating by being selfish and begging for followers, upvotes and resteems, why not change your attitude and first invest the effort into reading people’s post and afterwards dropping a insightful comment that could trigger the post author to want to check on your blog and connect with you.
The first whale upvote I got on steemit was from @papa-pepper after dropping a simple insightful comment on one of his many interesting post, he went right way to my blog, followed me and threw a few upvotes on many of my posts and that convinced me more that this strategy is the best and it works like magic.
Quality is better than quantity: I don’t expect everyone to agree with me on this because I have come across many steemians that advocate for quantity rather than quality. They say you have to drop about 100 comments a day to get notice and to make more money you have to post not less than 5 times a day.
Well I haven’t tried this so I won’t out rightly just say it doesn’t work but, I can compare myself to many steemians who did this and are not getting notice on steemit, so I would say the result I am getting is better.
Just like in life, on steemit quality is better than quantity and it helps a lot to get notice and become great. Now look at this and tell me which you will choose; a single whale following and upvoting your post and it makes $20 on average or 30 minnows following and upvoting your post and its makes $0.90 on average
Many will prefer the formal to the latter and if that’s you then you’ve got to start working for 1 or 2 quality posts per day and 15 or 20 quality comments per day.
Use the magic of giving first and receiving second: it’s a life principle as well and its works and I can guarantee that, at least for me. Do to others what you want others to do to you, if you want to receive then give first. If you want to become a whale then help 100 minnows become a dolphin.
There are a lot of great steemains already using this strategy and one steemian I admire so much for his passionate way of implementing this principle quite well is @ackza.
What he does mainly is going around steemit in search for talented minnows from African (because this is the continent where most of the poor in our world reside. let’s face it) and give his full support to those he discover.
@ackza has empowered so many Africans by buying solar power banks and sending to steemians in Nigeria and Ghana that would love to dedicate their time and energy into steemit but are been handicapped by epileptic power supply in Africa. He has also been supporting and advocating an Africa whose GDP is in large percentage powered by Steemit and cryptocurrency in the nearest future.
Recently he discovered me after I dropped a comment on one of his posts and he did something amazing to celebrate me on steemit. He dedicated a full article to write about me and that gave me a lot of exposure.
Another great steemian I have seen express this much kindness like @ackza is @stellabelle, she’s a wonderful lady and an asset to our community. She makes her contribution in diverse ways and I believe every minnow following her is gaining from her wealth of kindness and experience.
Summary
Steemit is a blogging and social networking website different from what the world has seen, where smart people with common sense gain influence, make money and build network and connections. You can become great on steemit if you follow the roles I have just listed above and many others from other great steemians.
the one thing I would suggest improving on is your graphic design.
It's really hard to read the letters because of their small size.
Wow about 3 people said same thing and i have been so lazy not to improve it. I think its time i listen to people who really like me and give me good suggestions
I know the feeling! In this one simply moving up the letters into the sky would have helped a lot. You'll get the hang of that though, no big deal. Great post man
Thanks man, you first gave me the graphic suggestion too and i didn't take it serious, i will amend on my next post
Cool man no problem, a not so great thumbnail may not hurt too bad but a great thumbnail may help a lot. Check out a few advertisements from random companies to get an idea of placements and fonts and find your favorites and try to duplicate.
wow, this is brilliant, and I read every single word. You spoke the truth, and basically you nailed it all! Congratulations!!!!!!!!
This was the best:
Now that you understand the first layer of Steemit, you can help others understand it too....there are many who need your help. You have a potential audience of thousands waiting. This is how it all starts. Steemit is not like any other site, because, you see.......
You and I are working inside a decentralized autonomous organization now. We are all colleagues, and no geographical barrier exists anymore. The world is our office.
Ohhh i love this analogy and my imagination is getting stressed out more than i could imagine. You inspire me a lot and i have no regret coming on steemit and discovering you and other great guys here like @ackza.
I love how i got employed into decentralized autonomous organization and working anytime i like and doing what i love with someone like you on a steemit office and earning nice pay :)
Thanks for reading and dropping by.
I appreciate that a lot

I love this Freudian slip. 😎
Follow for follow requests are really annoying and I am seeing them more often. A growing site by definition has lots of newbies who just don't know any better. But members who've been here for a while should know better.
Yes, I love getting the occasional whale upvote, but I would be even happier with a a few dozen minnow votes. If you want long-term success here, I think that slowly building up a base of actual readers as opposed to nominal followers is probably a good goal.
So I'll probably never make it to whale status, but becoming a dolphin within a year or so seems plausible. Now if I could just get around to writing that next post...
Not everyone admire the whale title or could become a whale and that's fine because we have different priorities in life and that's why i mentioned that we can achieve greatness on steemit without becoming a whale.
And yes i support the actual readers as opposed to nominal followers and that should be all steemians goal if possible.
Thanks for reading and dropping your thought.
Post what you want, Follow, re-steem and up-vote only those that you want to give attention to. All else will fall into place perfectly.
Yeah, you've got to follow the people you really like and want to see their post and not just some random guys you want to follow you back
This site seems to breed positive, active, and mature participation in a way no other platform could. I have been here a week and I can already see myself spending too much time here. I don't know this many smart, mature, or rational people in real life. . I am glad I got in early. I feel like it hasn't even started growing! Following!
Yeah, steemit is just starting out and there are a lots of potentials for this platform to grow like facebook and make it early adopter great.
Thanks for reading and dropping by
You're welcome it is a pleasure. I have been hooked since joining. Seems like we all got tired of the mainstream manipulation lol. Followed suit after we got tired of the money manipulation.
Can't hold us down!
Your post got a Resteem from me! (no small feat as I am very picky!)
Wow, thanks
I feel like the luckiest steemian now :)
This was a very well written post.
I agree with what you've said.
Indeed quality and persistance is the key to success.
It's a little bit like the wild west here, you can be down voted for no reason or maybe resentment.
I recently had such a thing happen to me, taking a point off of my reputation.
I have no idea why, but it dose not matter in the long run.
I'll just keep posting what I want to share, and I believe rewards will come in time.
I'm glad there are many fine people and articles such as yours, that are available.
Yeah, you've to keep doing what you know how to do best as long as its the right thing and i'm sure you will get noticed if you persist while providing quality.
Thanks for reading and dropping by with your thought
wow I'm thinking of dropping a few pounds and here is a great post on becoming a whale :D interesting irony :P my first steemit interview I watched was with @stellabelle but I was foolish not to follow her right away :/ silly me and I'm still learning the different ranks as I think I seen seaweed as one of them just the other day :) got a question for you without being rude and out right asking people, how do you tell if they are a whale, dolphin or other larger fish then a minnow ? thanks for sharing
Welcome to my blog and thanks for taking out time to read this and of course you made a big mistake not following @stellabelle the first time you came across her. The value you could get from her steemit posts can't be compare with anything else for now :)
A steemit dolphin is a user with over 5000 steem power, also called SP while a steemit whale is a user with over 50, 000 steem power, also called SP
I hope this help
Lots of facts here, this is the post of the day, good job @bania! 💪🏼🙌🏼💯
Thanks man
I'm glad to see you comment on my post and i appreciate all your upvotes so far, you're one of the great steemians i follow and learn from too, preparing to write something about you soon
