Plants come in different colors. However, most plants are green. Why? Science tells us that there are three classes of substances that are responsible for the variations in color, namely, the porphyrins, carotenoids, and flavonoids. One particular phorphyrin that is of great interest is the chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll plays a very important role in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a complex process whereby plants convert water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight into carbohydrates. In most plants, there is abundance of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll pigments absorb most of the energy from the violet-to-blue and red-to-orange wavelengths of the light spectrum. Interestingly, chlorophyll does not absorb the green hue of the sunlight but reflects it back to our eyes. Hence, we see the plant as green.
