A Simple Vegan Burger Recipe that Will Keep You Coming Back for More!

4 years ago when I turned vegan, I said goodbye to my friend the burger and assumed that we would never meet again. Whilst the latter is correct with a small adjustment, 'never meat again', I most certainly wasn't expecting to be building plant-based hero burgers.

Vegans in a desperate plea to eat burgers have gotten extremely creative, and the result are nothing short of miracles. Me, myself and Silvia (that's right, I count myself twice when it comes to food sharing), have spent hours upon hours this past year creating vegan burgers that are eatable!

There are a lot of awesome vegan burgers out there in the universe right now, but many of them seem to just be mushy and fall apart!

So we made it our mission to experiment and design a real vegan burger, a burger that you can be proud of. A burger that you can whip out of your magic hat at a grill party and flop it onto the grill without having to worry about it falling apart.

"A Burger that will not only make your meat eating friends taste buds quiver with excitement, but a burger that you'll be famous for at every neighbourhood get together"

That was our mission and today we want to present just one of those masterpieces to you, my vegan and non-vegan friends alike!

So get out your oven mits, dust of your chopping boards and get ready to make a simple yet perfect burger that is yours and yours only.

On to the recipe...

Ingredients

Things you'll need:

  • 400g of pre-soaked the night before black beans. (Buy them dry and soak them, as they'll be a lot firmer than already soaked beans)
  • Just 1/4 of a cup of flaxmehl flour to help stiffen things up.
  • 1 carrot finely chopped
  • 1/4 of both a red and green bell pepper
  • 1/2 a red onion
  • Bunch of cilantro
  • 2 spoons of agar agar (this is one of the secrets, you see nobody else talk about)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Toppings of your choice. We used, lettuce, zucchini, daiya cheese slices, red onions, avocado, purple cabbage and chillis.

We named this the Cahuita burger because we designed this recipe in Costa Rica

Directions

The How to Make Part:

  1. Heat the onions till they're slightly golden brown.
  2. Throw your beans, peppers, golden onions, fine chopped carrot, and finely chopped cilanto leaves and stems in to a bowl and start mashing with a fork. (don't blent it or use a mixer, this is a common mistake!)
  3. Once you've got things mixed up a bit, add some flaxmehl flour and 2tbs of agar agar.
  4. Keep adding the flour till your mix is firm and then form your burger patties.
  5. This is the hardest part. Let set in the fridge overnight, or at least 3 hours.
  6. Once your agar agar has sets in, you'll have rock solid burgers!
  7. In a frying pan add just 3 spoons of coconut oil and let it get rather hot.
  8. Add your burger beauties and cook them very shortly on each side and turn the heat down to medium, allowing your burgers to heat up in the middle as well.
  9. Prepare your toppings. On the bottom bun I always like to spread some vegan mayonaise and ketchup.
  10. Then I usually add 1 layer of lettuce and some zucchini and large tomato slice or 2.
  11. On the top part of the burger, I've added some Vegan cheeze, glazed onions, avocado, purple cabbage and a few chillis. This is totally optional though, although I do recommend as this combination was truthfully so good!

TIP: Make a batch of oven veggies instead of fries.

Conclusion: It took a while and a few attempts, with some experimenting we pulled off not just a pretty picture, but a real burger recipe that works!

Gosh that looks incredible! 😱 I love how you used agar agar - I've only used it in vegan jello before, but will have to try your burger recipe soon.

Thanks! And do you also know what's great about agar agar, it lowers your cholesterol! So it's a win win burger in my eyes :) Thanks for commenting by the way!
