Already before the birth of Jesus there should have been such a similar custom. At that time people did not celebrate Christmas, but the winter solstice. This festival took place on the 25th of December. People were happy that the longest nights were over and the days were getting longer. The winter solstice festival was probably the most important festival of the year for the ancient Teutons.

It was danced, laughed and celebrated and so-called sacrificial breads were baked. At that time, people believed that they could drive out demons and protect the souls of the dead. Christianity then made the Winter Solstice Festival, also known as the "Birthday of the Sun", the birthday of the Christ Child. And that's how the bread became the Christmas bread. We still know it as a Christmas stollen today.

In the Middle Ages this was then baked mainly in the monasteries. For a Christstollen exotic spices such as cloves, cinnamon and ginger are needed. At that time they were very expensive, as they had to be transported on camels and horses the long way from the Orient to Europe. In the richer families began to bake the delicious Christmas breads in smaller version - so eventually the Christmas biscuits.

And now for the recipe

ingredients

DOUGH
200 g of flour
12550 g cold butter vegan
35 g of powdered sugar
1 pinch of salt
35 g finely ground nuts (walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts) I used almonds
100 g finely grated, dark chocolate

ABUNDANCE
about 90 g of any jam
100 g of dark chocolate melted

PREPARATION

Sift flour and powdered sugar on a work surface, add the remaining ingredients and knead quickly to a dough, wrap it in cling film and let it rest in the fridge for about 90 minutes.

Roll out the dough about 2 mm thick on a floured work surface, cut out biscuits with a small biscuit mold and place on baking sheets lined with baking paper.

Bake the biscuits in a pre-heated oven at 150 ° C for about 10 minutes, remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Put together two biscuits with jam and leave for a few hours. Only then dip in the melted chocolate over a water bath.
