Become a Professional Video Editor

Hey everybody,

my name is Edy Boman and in this video i talk about how you can become a video editor.

There are three ways to become a professional video editor, but it really depends on what kind of format you want to edit. There are three ways:  

Way 1: Internships and assistant editing jobs here you learn everything from hardware, editing software, project management, like creating subsequences out of audio and video footage and most important, but that depends on the video editor, a lot about the art of editing. Write down questions and ask the editor after his sessions.

Way 2: through college or university here you can have a lot of creative collaborations with other student filmmakers. You can edit interesting formats such as short-movies, musicvideos, documentaries or even commercials. So you can test yourself on the different formats and then decide what fits your talent the most. The good think about collaborations is, that you as a group grow together. And maybe 10 years later, you are editing the next big independent movie hit.

Way 3: through youtube, instagram, etc. I my opinion the least promising way. For sure, there are youtubers out there, who are get editing jobs through their videos, but you have to have a filmmaker kind of specialized channel. People have to get to know you through your work, that means you need a lot of attention. Very hard especially when you just started your channel.

So all in all. I would recommend to go to college or university and after graduation gather experience through internships and assistant editing jobs. This would be the ideal way.
