Our time in Vienna written by János and István

We arrived in Vienna on 6th of January, 13:00. Our accommodation is at Hostel Hütteldorf in the suburbs of the city. The hostel is a really beautiful place with a really nice atmosphere. We settled into our rooms and we started looking around the place. It’s a very neat neighbourhood, quiet (most of the time) and clean.

Our first workday

On Tuesday we went to Hug Inn Vienna, HQ of @opt2o and the @globalschool project at 12:30. We started work on the new website. We did the basic framework for the webpage, so there’s something to build upon. We finished work at 13:30.

Our average day

During the week we were working on the website. On our first weekend, we went to Wien Mall. I (János) bought some books at Thalia. On Sunday we went to the Opera House for a tour spanning a large part of the city all the way to Maria-Theresien-Platz. Our weekday continues as usual, working on the webpage, going to cafés and sightseeing.

Work progress

Besides sightseeing, we were of course working further on the page. We managed to accomplish our goal of a simple, yet good-looking website. To celebrate, we went to a café to reward ourselves with a good, hot coffee at Café DirtWater.

Another sightseeing weekend

On Saturday, we went to the famous "Naschmarkt" near the Kettenbrückengasse metro 4 station. It was snowing as well, so it gave the whole city a really nice look, with snow everywhere. The market was really beautiful, but quite expensive compared to markets at home, in Hungary. I (István) bought 2 coconuts. After that we checked out the Technical University and Karlskirche Church. On Sunday we went to Castle Schönbrunn. It was a beautiful place, full of fancy, decorative statues, and buildings. Too bad we couldn’t take photos inside the buildings.

Conclusion

We enjoyed our time in Vienna, we explored a lot of places, seen a lot of beautiful buildings, went to tons of cafés, overall, we loved spending our time in the city.

My time in Wien written by András Jánovszki

I really enjoyed my time in Vienna. It was very different than being at home. At first it was a bit difficult but I got used to it. I had to face the fact that not everybody can speak English so I had to use the minimal German knowledge I have. On the other hand, Wien is a beautiful city. I was always fascinated by huge cities and Wien is one of them.

There are a lot of interesting sites and attractions that one should visit. Unfortunately I couldn’t visit all of them because of lack of time but I managed to get the most out of it. I stayed in Wien for 3 weeks and my job was to redesign a website. I’m very happy about the website and how I manage to work with my group.

We took Christoph Mann @manncpt, our tutor, advice and visited many cafes like Dirtwater. This got us to move out a bit and see even more of the city.

We arrived in Vienna on 6th of January about 13 o’clock. After arriving we captured our room, at the Hostel Hütteldorf’s 6th floor. I was very surprised when I looked through the window. It was an amazing sight, and it still wonderful. I packed out my luggage and after all on Sunday we went to sightseeing. At lunch we went in a Hungarian restaurant. The dinner wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good too. On Monday we had a meeting with the Austraining team, and then our tutor @manncpt arrived. We made two groups. We started to work on Wednesday. The project was a basic and clean idea. I had been promoted to be the social media guy. I realised, we are only teammates and friends, but we have to trust each other as a family. So I helped as much as I was able to do. Since arriving I was amazed by the culture, the graffiti's and the buildings. I said: ”Wow!” so many times. We worked more than 50 hours and we worked very hard to make a perfect website. Sometimes we were lazy, but I was always able to help.

This is my first time to be in Vienna and being far from home. I miss my family, the school and friends. During the three weeks I saw French, Italian and Hungarian groups in the hostel. Christoph Mann is a very kind person, and he loves coffee.

We visited the Technician Museum, so many churches and the market. We were in the city mall and it was bigger than I thought. We could eat, drink, and buy so many stuff there. The work was very active. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we had to go to the office. Vienna is a beautiful city. I love it.

At the beginning it was very interesting but also strange, because this was a whole new situation we were experiencing. We met new people, from our school and from Vienna too. In the first days, we introduced ourselves. We played a lot of pool, where the mood was very good. We received our tasks and we started to work on them on the weekdays. Besides this we did a lot of sightseeing around the city at the weekends. Sometimes, we met Hungarian people too: There was a Hungarian restaurant, where we had dinner twice and one of the staff were Hungarian.

We went to cafés around Vienna and we have seen the most famous and beautiful places. This includes monuments, museums and castles for example, the Schönbrunn Palace. We had flexible work times as long as we could fullfill our duties. We worked at home or at different places such as cafés or co-working spaces.

We drank some very good coffee and tea. It was diverse from what we can see in Hungary. Almost everyone can speak English but most of the people in the streets spoke German because we were in Austria. As we worked we have gained a lot of new experiences and we have learnt much. By the time we were there it felt more comfortable. Over all we had a very good time and we enjoyed it.

We arrived on the fifth of January, what was a non-working day, just as the sixth. That meant we had the opportunity to explore our surroundings. Fortunately we have a Spar close to our accommodation. On the third day we got our work projects. We could chose from two projects. The first one was a website redesign of The Internet of Ideas website. The second one was a Contact app. Because we haven't finished our studies, we choose the website redesign.

Our tutor Christoph explained how we should do our work. We were very lucky, because we didn’t have to work from the office all day. He introduced us an Viennese tradition, what many freelancers follow nowadays, and that is: working from café houses. They call it "Lazy Creativeness". When we weren’t going to the office we went to see a café house, which is a great experience. This way we were able to get to know the city more deeply.

We've been in different types of cafés like Café Sperl what is a more archaic, and elegant place. It was a really fancy place. It felt like we should have dressed more smart to fit there.

Cafe Sperl GS 01:02.jpg

Next time we went to Café Phil which is a more casual place. If you are bored, you can also buy books there written in german, and also in english. We really liked the atmosphere, and the music as it gave the place a perfect condition for working.

CAfe Phil GS 01:20.jpg

We also had great time in Hug Inn Vienna. There is a big table so every one has enough space to work. It is also very comfortable and welcoming. We would definitely suggest to anybody to work there.

On the first weekend we went sightseeing with a tour guide. We could see how beautiful Vienna really is.
We have seen a lot of stunning monument such as St. Stephan's Cathedral, St. Peter's Catholic Church, Vienna State Opera and so on.

Later that day we went to see the Technisches Museum Wien. It's a huge museum, and when I say huge I mean gigantic. It had three levels, and we spent 3 hours just to explore the first one. You could easily spend your entire day there, and you could still find new things.

On the second weekend, we visited the Castle of Schönbrunn. We experienced our first audio tour. We have had given a gadget, when we entered a room we had to press the right number, than we could hear the history of the room in our native language. We really enjoyed it.

On the third week we had out final evaluation, in spaces. We haven't seen a place like this before. It's a huge office building with a great working environment. I would definitely recommend to anybody who is looking for a quite, clean place to work at.

In conclusion we had a really great time in Vienna, and we would like to come back later if we will have the opportunity.

My experience in Vienna written by Tamás Tyetyák

My first thoughts about this trip were: "There's no chance i'm going to Vienna for 3 weeks" and now that I'm here, I'm happy that I changed my mind back then. Although I didn't get much new knowledge in IT, I had many other experiences that I can be useful in the soon future.

We arrived to Vienna on the 5th of January 2020, after a 5 hours long bus trip. In the first week, we got to know the accommodation, where we'll be living for 3 weeks. The hostel looks quite nice and it's in a good condition, but on the other hand it's not practical at all, and that's a core problem. The next day we went around Vienna, which is a gorgeous city, and looked for some shops.

We met with our mentor, Christoph Mann, who informed us about our work, the workplace and the work culture here in Vienna. He also sent us work packages, that we had to work on these weeks. At first glance it seemed difficult, but we knew we could do it. Our workplace was a little smaller than I expected, but it was quite cozy and modern. The first day of work was something like a warm up. We planned how we wanted to create the website, and started researching information about the original website. On the following 2 days we had to work on our own, because, unfortunately Christoph got ill, and we couldn't go to our workplace.

On these days we did the basics of the website, got information, text, photos and such, and now we clearly new how we want the website to look like. On the weekends we went to a cultural program, where we were introduced to the most popular sights and buildings of Vienna. We also went to an awesome Technical Museum, where we saw lots of amazing machines.

On the second week, Christoph got better, and we could meet again at Hug Inn. We continued the research and the editing of the website. Christoph told us that here in Vienna people often work from Cafés, so the next day we went to Café Sperl, which has more like a classic style, while the other Café we went to, Café Phil, was more modern and young. We continued the project from these Cafés. On Wednesday we improved the look of the website at the office, and started discussing the following programs with Christoph. On Thursday there was a tutor change, but fortunately it didn't effect our work progress. We even went to some Cafés through the weekdays, like Café Dirt3Water. The next day, we were shown a cool 3D editor program, that was created by Jean himself. We started to model our workplace, the Hug Inn, in 3D, and our teammate started designing a cybertruck.

At the weekend, we had another cultural program where we visited the Castle of Shönbrunn, which is design is breath-taking and totally unique. The only disappointment was that we only got so see 12 rooms, and there are actually much more than that. On Saturday we even went to the market at Vienna, while it was heavily snowing.

On the last week, we started to finalize our project, because on Wednesday we had to introduce our work we did thus far. On Friday we finished the 3D modelling, and on Tuesday, the website was finally complete, and ready to be introduced, and used. My personal opinion is that both of the websites the 2 groups created looked better than the original one. On Wednesday we didn't go to Hug Inn, because we had the opportunity to introduce our work at Spaces, which is a beautiful and modern working place.

Both teams introduced their Websites and the 3D projects, and Christoph said that he is proud of us. Today is Thursday and now I'm writing this Article about the three amazing weeks we had had here in Vienna. I hope the following 3 days are going to be relaxing and we'll have a good time. This trip was a special time of my life and if I could I would come again anytime.

Our experiences in Vienna written by Kun Sándor & Dániel Megyeri

About the accommodation:

I had a lot of good and some bad experiences at the accommodation. When we arrived to Hostel Hütteldorf, we looked around in it. The bedrooms are modern and comfortable, the bathroom is pretty comfortable. I had some bad observations, for example there was not a fridge on every floor, but at large it was good. The food was usually ok, but sometimes it wasn’t.

About the work:

At the first week, we had a meeting with our tutor, Christoph Mann at the Hostel. He told us about the organisation (Option 2.0 @opt2o) what we’ve to work on. We had to go to a workplace on every second weekday. Christoph suggested to go to cafes. We’ve been in a lot of cafes, for example at DirtWater or at Cafe Sperl. The cafes were really nice and the staff were good too. We were working at Hug In Vienna, it was comfortable and nice.

About the city:

I think Vienna is a beautiful place to live and also to see for tourists. In the city there are many shop centres and cafe and quite aged as well the houses. We were at a lot of places, for example in a bookshop named Thalia. It was a quite big shop with two-storey, so we found whatever we wanted. The city centre is lovely, but the suburban places are not that interesting.

Culture programme

At the first weekend we were in the city center to visit the opera and we had a tour in the city of its famous places. Unfortunately we couldn’t go in, so we just saw the outside of the building. It was pretty nice. Along the tour we saw the Technical Museum and the Square of Heroes. The museum was very interesting for me, there were many machines what is relates with what I learn in school. The square was very big and beautiful.

At the second weekend we were in the Castle of Schönbrunn. I think it’s a very nice castle with a quite big garden. Inside the castle there are so many rooms. They are clean and nice. The garden would have been nicer if we go at spring, but it was nice in that time too.
