What to do at Vienna Airport - Transportation and what to exploresteemCreated with Sketch.

in #vienna6 years ago (edited)

I recently visited the Airport in Vienna, Flughafen Wien-Schwechat in German. On my trip I discovered couple things I want to share with you today, suggestions to make your stay there more comfortable but also exciting should or will you ever travel there; so better bookmark this page.

About the Airport:

The Airport itself is medium-sized compared to other Airports, just a bit over 24 Million Passengers flew to or from here last year, it has excellent amneties and public transport connections and is located in the heart of Europe: Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary are all under 1 hour reach and even Germany, Slovenia, Poland can be reached in around 2 Hours.

In this Article I would like to share some pictures of the airport and give a bit of useful advice. Join in and explore

Terminals:

There are two main Terminals in the Airport, if you arrive by a Star Alliance Carries (Lufthansa, Austrian, Croatian Airlines and a LOT more) you will arrive in Terminal 3. All other airlines arrive in Terminal 1.

Terminal 3 is marked by the colour black, and is pretty elegant. Here you will find comfortable seats, lounges and a fully fledged supermarket! I can't count how many times I have missed a proper supermarket, with regular prices in my travels.

Good things to know:

-) Supermarkets

There are two real supermarkets in the airport: Billa and Spar in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. (Spar is a bit cheaper than Billa and has a greater selection) There are delicious fresh ready-to-go, decently priced snacks and sandwiches on offer. Even Vegetarian and Vegan Options.

-) Visitor Terrace and Plane Spotting

There is a visitor terrace on which you will have a great sight over the four runways, there you can pass time watching planes land and taking off.

-) Traditional Viennese Food and Breakfast

If you would like to try some Viennese pastries try the Anker and Demel bakeries. Anker has good breakfast, both serve Viennese coffee.

-) Relaxing and staying at the Airport

If you want to relax or even if you have an overnight connection, stay within the terminal. There are some great reclining benches perfect for sleep, with power sockets and USB for charging; found inside but unfortunately not outside the Gates. If you are staying overnight outside the gates then go with Terminal 3, it's more comfortable.

-) Best Transportation

To get to and from the Airport travel by train, the most superior, cheapest and fastest form of transportation. High Speed Trains travel to and from the Airport about every half hour and cost a tenth of the Taxi-Fare.

-) Travelling onwards to Slovakia, Czechia and Hungary

If you are traveling to the Bratislava, or the Czech and Hungarian Borders, consider getting a group saver ticket for the train, rather than taking the long and uncomfortable bus. For 34€/2 pers - 46€ up to 5 pers, you can travel all day on ÖBB Regional trains.

-) Visit Vienna

Don't miss out on Vienna, on a long connection. The city-center is only 30 Minutes away. Trains run reliably and often.
Recommandation: Castle Belvedere (Just next to the Main Station)

-) Danube Meadows

The Danube Meadows, a huge nature reservation is just 15 Minutes from the Airport and directly accessible by train.
It is a great eco-system with no human interference, preserved from hundred-thousands year ago. If you are lucky you can spot White-Tailed-Eagles hunting Fish, Beavers, Turtles, Kingfishers [Birds, not the Airline] Deers and more exciting Flora and Fauna.

-) Best Seating Side for Landing

If you are landing here, better be seated on the left side on the plane. Maybe you will land on runway 11 and enjoy majestics views over the whole city-center and old town. On the right side you will only see suburbs.

[See YT Video below]

The sorts of views, you maybe can expect if yousit on the left side during landing
(Spoiler Alert)
