Benefits
When looking at options for a cabin, outbuilding, storage, etc., we know there are many types of buildings and construction methods from which to choose. Below are some of the benefits of selecting a container home for your needs:
Strength and Durability. Containers are much stronger than normal wood construction methods. They are made with steel uni-body construction, the strongest construction method possible. The walls are made from 14 gauge, 0.075 inch corrugated sheet steel panels that are welded to the main structure. The top and bottom side rails and end frames are 7 gauge tubular steel. The steel used to build modern shipping/cargo container is a corrosive resistant high-strength low-alloy steel. The roof of the containers is constructed with die-stamp corrugated steel sheets with a certain chamber at the center. The roof’s main purpose is to keep out the elements. The bottom of the container has 3-4 mm thick cross members that have recesses along the bottom side rails, which allows them to be lifted with special straddle carriers. The floor of the shipping/cargo container is 28 mm thick with 19 ply treated plywood screwed into the structural cross members. Shipping containers are built to resist snow, wind, hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes.
Move in the same day. All of our homes are custom designed based on the specific usage requirements and preferences of the customer. They are pre-plubmed, pre-wired, and delivered completely assembled. As long as the required services (water, electric, sewer/septic) are onsite, they can be set, secured, and hooked up the same day. You would be living in the home that evening!
Low maintenance. If you are interested in as little maintenance as possible, we offer metal and vinyl siding options. With metal siding and roof, there is little to no outside maintenance required. This is perfect for a lake cabin or hunting cabin where you do not want to spend your time maintaining the building when you are there to enjoy the time you have away. Also, with the full metal option you will never worry about having to replace boards or siding due to wood rot.
Termite and Insect resistant. The only wood found in the container itself is the flooring. It is 28mm thick with 19 ply plywood, treated to be weather and insect resistant, which is extremely important in the original purpose of shipping materials. The walls are solid steel so there is no surface for termites to eat. Also, due to the solid construction of the container, the only openings for pests of any kind to enter the container is through any openings cut into the container for doors and windows. All of these openings are insulated and caulked/siliconed to prevent weather and insects or rodents from entering. You can put one of these container cabins in the middle of the woods and be confident that it will not be destroyed by insects.
Weather resistant. Shipping containers were built specifically to withstand all types of severe weather. They were built not only to withstand being stacked 8 or 9 high, but also to withstand the strong rains and winds incurred when traveling across the ocean on shipping vessels. All of the repurposed containers we use are still deemed to be wind and water tight. Add to this any outside siding and inside insulation and wall material and you have an amazingly weather tight structure.
Made for transporting. Shipping containers were specifically designed for transport. There are many tow and transport services which will pick up and deliver the containers. Because they are 8′ wide they are not considered an ‘oversize load’, making shipping costs less than moving a conventional building. We can help you arrange delivery and placement of the container home on your site or you are free to contact your own tow service if you have your own contacts. You are also free to pick up the container home yourself if you have the equipment.
