Tips of choosing VPS for starter
Chances are that you can't access some websites if you are in China. While VPN is a great workaround to address this issue, any secure, fast and reliable VPN could be costly. So you need to look into a value-for-money solution called VPS
Assuming that you have basic knowledge about VPS ,I'd like to share 3 tips of choosing servers.
- Physical distance matters. For example, there are many VPSs located all over the world on vultr.com that you can select and if it is the top priority for you to have faster speed accessing blocked websites, you should choose servers based in Tokyo rather than US because Tokyo is closer than US to China (Sorry there is no HK or TW-based VPS on vultr.com now).
By the way, the reason I recommend vultr.com is that it has superior performance to other VPS host websites, as far as I know.
- BBR rocks. BBR is an open source congestion control algorithm. You don't have to know what is so-called "congestion control algorithm"exactly. The only thing you need to know is that process of accessing blocked websites(like watching youtube videos) could be painfully slow without BBR or any other valid netspeeder software.
By the way, BBR is free of charge while other solutions could be billable,in most cases.
If you are familiar with Linux command lines, click this link below to install BBR on your vultr VPS within one minute,or two. Just follow on the commands on the black boxes step-by-step if you don't understand Chinese explanation surrounding them.
- Plan B. It is strongly recommended that you buy VPS service from more than one vendor, just in cases. You have a server at vultr.com? Great, but how about buying another one on bandwagonhost.com in case that all vultr.com IPs are blocked all in sudden.
Enjoy.
