How to use Keybase as your HiFi hosted playground

So keybase is a really neat thing, it allows for you to do end to end encrypted chat and makes it easy enough that anyone can use it. But one of the really new cool things they have brought out is the Keybase Filesystem. This is a online storage area where you can place your files either encrypted so that only you (or someone you might be working with on keybase) can access or put files publicly that have been verified by you! These files can be access by a web portal and in a few easy steps you can have a file that's on your computer, into High Fidelity!

Lets get the steps

Step one: Make a Keybase Account and install the app

So this might be a bit self explanatory but for you will need to head over to Keybase and make an account by clicking join and download the app, its available for Mac, PC, Linux etc. etc.

I would recommended that you make a paper key after you have your account set up on your computer and have that stored somewhere safe. Keybase itself does not keep a copy of your private keys or passwords, so if your computer is to kick the bucket, forget your password or something to that effect the only way to get access to Keybase again if you do not have a paper key (or another device) is to go back to a clean slate, which will remove everything you will soon have hosted on their service.

Step two: Meet the Keybase Folder (or drive)

Congratulations! If you have got this far you should now have access to a really cool new drive! (or folder!) On windows you will now have a new fancy K drive in your My Computer and for Linux / Mac you will now have a /keybase/ directory. So now if you head over to either K:/public/your_username or /keybase/public/your_username with your_username being the username that you used when you signed up with Keybase. We can now start putting some of your sweet things onto the internet for all to see you can even put a neat website there!

Step three: Getting those sweet links!

So hopefully now you have some of your sweet files that you want onto High Fidelity in your public folder and you are ready and raring to go. What next? Well Keybase has a public website called keybase.pub that you can use to see your files. So if you goto https://keybase.pub/your_username with of course your_username being the username you signed up with Keybase you will get a nice little page with the content of your public folder. Here's a picture of mine for an example.

So now if you select a file in your public area down the bottom there is a </> Raw this is a direct http link to the file so if you right click this and copy the link..

... and paste this into High Fidelity!

Then bam! You can now show off your fancy things to everyone!
