Russia World Cup: New currency depicting legendary Soviet goalkeeper unveils
It might be hard to imagine currency without the face of a political leader, but this will come true for many Russians as 20 million bills depicting legendary goalkeeper Lev Ivanovich Yashin begin circulating on Tuesday.
To commemorate the upcoming FIFA World Cup, Russia’s Central Bank has unveiled new 100-ruble (1.63 US dollars) banknotes.
A boy admiring Yashin diving for the ball adorns the front side of the bill. Yashin, who passed away at 61 in 1990, was nicknamed the “Black Spider” or the “Black Panther.” The Soviet footballer was widely regarded as the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the sport.
The back side shows a soaring ball with a map of Russia, and a list of the host cities in the background.
The banknotes are made of plastic, with holographic images that can be seen under UV light or from different angles.
