Nigeria culture 3:The igbo

The igbo culture is the 3rd most popular and populated spoken language in Nigeria. The igbo people are sumtimes refered to as the Igbos and is located in the southeastern part of Nigeria . The culture is diverse in nature and their diversity originated from them being dividen the easthern and mid-western regions by the Niger-River. Though the two regions varies in certain cultural aspect, there are some aspects that still remains thesame no matter the side of igbo land been visited.

Culture.
Many characteristics of the igbo culture are abit unconventional even when it come to socializing they tend to be traditional . Respect is given to the male head of the household and also to the eldest, it is been ingrain in the children in the early stage to respect their elders at all times no matter what circumstance. As in many culture your social status depends on status of wealth.
In an igbo community, its members are been classified into three groups, The" inukwu mmadu"Which covers the rich, "dimkpa" the middle class And the "ogbenye" who are the lower class. This classification is similar to most classification systems around the world

Once a child is born, his umbilical cord is buried under a tree of the mothers choosen at that moment they believe the tree belongs to the child and it will grow in accordance to the successfull the child becomes . The igbos hold both death and birth at a vary high and celebrated standard were by all members of the communitu throws a naming ceremony in which friends and family choose names for the child.
As you already know that death also is very important to the igbos. When a family member passes, there is a service held in which the body is sat in an upright position and the family and friends gather around to pay thier respects. Males as the head of the house are been buried underneath their family's house. The ibgos paspective on death as a time of commemoration as opposed to the time of sadness.
