Support Internally Displaced Persons from the War in Cameroon
We know it may sound bizarre to say we are at war in Cameroon but it’s real. Cameroon is at war. We are in a civil war between the armed separatist of comprising of English Speaking Cameroonians from the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon against the Cameroonian military.
A lot of steemians like @manka, @martin.mikes, @mr-greens, @princelouise and others have written about the war in Cameroon and you can learn more about it at: https://steemit.com/crisis/@mr-greens/life-in-a-dead-city-part-1-living-in-the-ghost-town-city-of-bamenda-north-west-region-cameroon
However, I just wanted to let you know some of the impacts of this war;
- Millions of English speaking Cameroonians are in need of humanitarian assistance
- More than 500,000 English speaking Cameroonians have been displaced as a result of this war with more than 100,000 of them being refugees in Nigeria
- Thousands of people have already died as a result of the 2 years crisis
- The material and financial damages of the war is worth billions of CFAF
- A big xenophobic rift is widening as a result of the crisis
Learn more about this by reading the UNICEF Cameroon Humanitarian Situation Report, February 2018
These are just some of the impacts and if rapid action is not taken by the local and international community, the situation may get worst.
@thegreens visit 71 victims of the war in Cameroon
Last week, some members of @thegreens (@mr-greens and Gilbert), members of Bamenda III Cameroon National Youth Council and members of Hope Foundation Cameroon, visited some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Bamenda, the North West Region of Cameroon to donate some gifts and most importantly assess their most pressing needs. The community we visited was a Muslim community located at Hot Spot in Bamenda and when we got there, the people’s living conditions was deplorable and life was becoming a burden for most of people who shared very frightening stories of what had happened to their families and property.
It’s with respect to this that we decided to take rapid action to salvage the situation of the 71 IDPs we visited.
We are hereby seeking your financial support to purchase food, medicines and school supplies for these Internally Displaced Persons.
When we visited we had the following demographic statistics;
- Men – 7
- Women – 24
- Girls (Children) – 14
- Girls (Youths) – 10
- Boys (Children) – 9
- Boys (Youths) – 3
- Babies – 4 (3 Boys and 1 Girl)
Total - 71
We want to support these people to have the most important needs of life which are food, medicine, education and a comfortable staying place.
Our goal is to raise 635 SBD to provide these people their most important needs which are;
1. Food
These people are in dire need of food and you realize most of them are women and children who need special attention.
We want to purchase rice, corn, crayfish, groundnut and vegetable oil.
A bag of rice weighing 50Kg costs 30SBD. We wish to purchase 5 Bags of Rice
A bag of Corn weighing 50Kg costs 23SBD. We wish to purchase 5 Bags of Corn
A bag of groundnuts costs 80SBD. We wish to purchase 1 bag of Groundnut
20 Litres of Palm oil costs 23 SBD. We wish to purchase 100 Litres of Palm oil.
We need about 460 SBD to purchase food for these people.
2. Medicines
Most of them have a common cold and cough and can’t even afford for basic medicines and this explains why we want to purchase them medicines for first aid. We are currently working with some medical experts to see if they can offer free medical attention to the displaced persons.
With 100SBD, we can purchase first aid medications such as Paracetamol, Diclofenac, and medicines for Common cold, Malaria, Cough, etc.
3. Mattresses, Blankets and Clothes to keep them warm.
Most of them sleep on the ground and since it’s the wet season, they can easily catch cold or get pneumonia. However, @ecodesigns is working to provide them with sleeping bags and mattresses made from textile waste, as well as with clothes, shoes and blankets. This item is already being taken care of by @ecodesigns
4. Education
About 36 of these Internally Displaced Persons are children and youths and they need to go back to school and this explains why we want to purchase these kids books and schools materials.
If we provide each child with 4 books, 2 pens and 2 pencils, they will be able to attend a nearby school.
A book costs 0.4SBD, 2 pens and 2 pencils cost 0.4 SBD.
With approximately 75 SBD we can purchase books, pens and pencils for these 36 kids to go back to school for the main time.
In total, we need about 635SBD plus items from @ecodesigns to give hope to these internally displaced persons from the war in Cameroon.
We believe we can raise this amount if we get 500 resteems of this posts, thousands of of upvotes and donations.
We have planned to visit these 71 Internally displaced persons on the 17th of November 2018 and all the funds raised from this post will dedicated towards the cause. While awaiting your support from @steem, we are also mobilizing people from within our region to support us and we shall post local support updates as comments on this post so that you are informed of how much we are raising locally offline.
We are hereby seeking the support of @pennsif and @adollaraday, @fundition, @chrisaiki and @solarcoach, @dynamicgreentk and @dynamicsteemians, @indigoocean, @martin.mikes and @kedjom-keku, @tribesteemup, @earthtribe, @ecotrain, @informationwar, @canadian-coconut, @steemiteducation and every generous Steemian who wants to make a change in the lives of people. We will greatly appreciate support in terms of upvotes, posts relating to the subject, resteems, Steem/SBD donations or putting out a post to raise funds on our behalf.
Thanks for supporting us to give hope to victims of war.
