A Wedding at the Melbourne Zoo

Last night we had a family wedding at the Melbourne Zoo. It was a fantastic night held in a great location. The Zoo hosts 60 weddings a year and there are many different spots throughout the Zoo grounds that are great to host the ceremony.

We started out near the meerkats and platypus garden for the ceremony. The day started out pretty typically Melbourne, overcast and raining, but the clouds broke 30 minutes before the ceremony and the heavens smiled upon the bride and groom and kept all the guests dry.

Whilst the bridal party were having their photos taken, guests were free to walk the grounds of the zoo and check out the animals and enclosures.

Eventually, we made our way to the ‘Bong-Su’ conference room for the reception. This room is situated right next to the elephant enclosure and it was fantastic to see them as they were herded away for the night. By 5pm, at the zoo’s closing time, all the animals were removed from their exhibits and we weren’t allowed to leave the reception area. The zoo hires security to ensure guests don’t get drunk and decide to visit the gorillas or elephants in the middle of the night.

Right next to the reception room there is a tree kangaroo enclosure which is perfect as these nocturnal animals were active all night, keeping the kids, and some adults, entertained.

Eventually, once the reception came to a close and the bride and groom had left, we were ‘escorted’ by security from the zoo grounds. So we staggered like a pack of drunken baboons from the venue and were sent off into the wilds of the Melbourne night.

It was a fantastic night and venue and a great ight was had by all.
